Shingles is a secondary stage of chicken pox. You don't get shingles from somebody else, you would get chicken pox if you haven't had it before, regardless of your age.
If you had chicken pox earlier, you may now have a case of shigles but has nothing to do with your sister in-law.
In your csae, you're immunocompromised. Therefore you should go to your infectious diseases specialist or even your primary care immediately so if it is actually shingles, you could get valtrex at appropriate doses. If the lesions are disseminated, you may need intravenous, so don't automedicate. Also teh rash could be due to the lupus, depending on the type of cancer, that could do it too, and last but not least medications.
I hope it helps.

Although it is the same virus, in children it becomes chicken pox and in adults is becomes shingles.
Neither one is usually serious, but there can be serious cases in adults for both.
There is no cure, since it is a Herpes type virus.
Shingles is extremely painful, with the pain preceding the typical rash by a few days.
Other than the pain and rash, there are no other effects.
The rash goes away without leaving any scars or marks.
The biggest problem with shingles is it can re-occur, like any Herpes infection (fever blisters are Herpes, too)
In your case, you have a weakened immune system from your other illnesses. That gives you more risk for contracting shingles, not being able to resist infection, and having worse outbreaks. You are also at risk for the chronic form of the disease, which unfortunately is chronic pain.
You need to have medical care right away to help avoid this part of the disease, which can be prevented to some extent.
Don't wait.

Go to the doctor if you had chicken pox as a kid, then you could have shingles now...if you didn't have chicken pox or the vaccine as a kid, then you would have chicken pox before shingles I would think...With cancer and lupus, you could be immune suppressed and it could affect you worse than other people, but you may just have a lupus rash..

I know that shingles is very, very uncomfortable, to say the least. I know that if an HIV infected person gets shingles or chicken pox, it can be lethal. I do not know how dangerous it is for one with Lupus. I do know that when you immune system is way down, chicken pox AND/or shingles are very severe!

You should go to the doctor. Shingles are serious especially if you're already sick. They can do damage to organs. If the rash starts wrapping around your torso-go to the hospital.
