Hey guys

had a conversation with a friend about a theory she has, which I would like to check out and prove her wrong (not going to say what it was, it was a long conversation!). Can anyone point me to the chapter and book/s where I can get the following info(in the Bible, Old and New Testament)?

1) the devil being able to do the ultimate good to perform the ultimate evil
2) the fact that Jesus died for our sins
3) the part where jesus wandered into the desert for 40 days and was confronted by the devil.
4) about us having to go through Jesus christ to get to God (or so I've heard)
5) the general fall of Satan from grace and the battle in heaven.
6) Any other relevant tidbits to do with Jesus and the Devil, inc. why he is referred to as "Christ", e.t.c.

Sorry for the really badly worded questions and stuff, not sure how to explain it. Suffice to say I want to do a bit of searching for myself.

perhaps the greek mythology is more interesting, but that's not the point. From what I have read and what I have heard, the Bible is still fascinating, abeit for slightly different reasons. As for getting a life, there is a very good reason why I'm doing this (apart from the fact some of my interests are psychology, sociology, theology and religion!).

I ahve to say though there aren't any local church groups I know of I could attend and ask these questions, and more importantly sadly the few poepl I do know can be a little intolerant sometimes. Shame really.

Anyway, thank you very much to those who have helped so far.

1. To suit his own evil purposes, Satan can seem to do good.
(2 Corinthians 11:14-15) And no wonder, for Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light. 15 It is therefore nothing great if his ministers also keep transforming themselves into ministers of righteousness. But their end shall be according to their works.

2. Adam was perfect, then disobeyed, causing death to him and everyone since.
[ Genesis 2; 16,17]
A perfect man had to 'buy back' for us the right to again live without death. Jehovah God supplied his perfect son for the purpose. A sacrifice was necessary. Jesus was that sacrifice.
Jesus was rewarded by being made King of God's promised Kingdom [ Matthew 6; 9,10]
The Bible calls this a 'ransom' sacrifice.
The result is; (Revelation 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

3. Matthew 4;8 and Luke 4;5

4. (John 14:6) Jesus said to him: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

5. (Revelation 20:3) And he hurled him into the abyss and shut [it] and sealed [it] over him, that he might not mislead the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After these things he must be let loose for a little while.

(Revelation 20:10) And the Devil who was misleading them was hurled into the lake of fire and sulphur, where both the wild beast and the false prophet [already were]; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

6. Jesus was the promised 'Messiah" or "Christ"
The words mean the same.
Jesus is NOT God as some religions teach, but is God's son.
It was God who spoke out of heaven when Jesus was baptised.
they cannot be the SAME entity.

1..The devil being able to do 'ultimate good'?? There is in the book of Job, info that seems to indicate that the devil was/is a part of God's "staff".
2..Check any of the 4 gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) or read through any of the other books of the New Testament.
3..Ditto..read in the gospels. The story is there
4..Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me" (John 14:6)
5.. that one is in Revelation. Good reading
6..Jesus is referred to as "christ"..no, He is _the_ Christ, that is, the Annointed One, Messiah. That is all Old Testament prophesies fufilled.

There are several Bible study options not including internet. Why don't you get with one of your local church groups and take a look?

No church groups??? Where do you live anyway? So, find your nearest United Methodist group. Those folks should be fairly tolerant. Jehova's Witnesses are always glad to make a home visit and discuss Bible with all who will (they are Christians, BTW, just not 'mainstream'. They do have the requisite core beliefs).
Other than that, go online and search 'bible study', get to an online Bible at http://www.biblegateway.com/ which has several translations and many languages available, or feel free to e-me and I will help where I can.

I think that the problem is is the basement you use as a research, any of these topics has extended theological studies, incredibly interesting, and is easy to see the effect of the death of Jesus as he predicted changed the world and the values, the topic of the devil is incredibly studied and as the father, the son, the holy spirit...exist Sata, Lucifer and Beelzebub...the Bible is the based study, Historical events related and explained, the deeper theology of Christianity is rather much beautiful and amazingly interesting, if you try to find answers to this you need to study the theology side of Christianity related with rites and not just to take the "light explanation for parents" which the Bible is...

1) The Devil is not able to do good, God just uses the devil like a marionette puppet to consumate His redemptive plan for man kind.

2) Jesus died for our sins:
2 Cor. 5:21, "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."
1 Peter 2:24, "and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed."
Rom. 8:3-4, "For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh. 4in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit".

3)Jesus in the desert tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1 Through 4:11)

4)1 Tim. 2:5, "For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."

5)Isa 14:12 ¶ How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! (read the rest of that chapter)

Rev 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, (read the rest)

2) Prophecy by Isaiah five hundred years BC.
Isa 53:1 Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
Isa 53:2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
Isa 53:3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Isa 53:4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.
Isa 53:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
Isa 53:9 And they made His grave with the wicked-But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Isa 53:10 Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
Isa 53:11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.

The film Passion of the Christ portrays this fullfilment in Prophecy. Coincidence or the Truth. There are loads of prophecies for Jesus as the Messiah who was to come as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world in the Old (BC) Testament. I will try to help with the other questions. Cool questions, good stuff.

Mat 12:43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.
Mat 12:44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
Mat 12:45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Mat 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
Mat 4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
Mat 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
Mat 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Mat 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
Mat 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Mat 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Mat 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
Mat 4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
Mat 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
Mat 4:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Rev 20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Rev 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Rev 20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Rev 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Rev 20:7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
Rev 20:8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
Rev 20:9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

To be continued . . . .
