78 pound chinook salmon in a river in northern British Columbia.
i did lose a 8+ foot sturgeon right at the boat on the Fraser River but that does not count because i did not handle it or get it in the boat.

I once was fishing the White River in Arkansas while camping. I had just filled my reel with new 4 pound test line. I was fishing from the bank in the campground and had caught some 12-14 inch cutthroats. I decided to throw out a little farther and see what happened(all eight generators were going so the water was at full tilt). I got a hit and set the hook, the next thing I knew line was being stripped from my reel and all I could do was basically hold on and try and turn the fish. After about 20 minutes, and several runs by the fish to deeper and faster water, I was able to land it. It was a beautiful 25" Brown trout. The people in the bait shop had noticed me outside while I was trying to land the fish and they closed the shop and brought out a camera. When I had the fish in there were about 30 people lined up on the bank behind me watching and then clapping when I got him in. I released the fish and had my picture taken and received a "trophy release" pin for my efforts. It was great.

I once caught a 6' 5" Halibut about 240 pounds by myself. After I landed the big fish which involved shooting it between the eyes with my 45 ACP I caught a 150 pound Halibut. This all in 3 hours of fishing. My secret spot south of Juneau, AK. I had so much Halibut that I ended up giving most of it away.

The biggest fish I've caught would be when I went fishing at the Tennessee River and caught a 40 pound blue catfish. That is medium size compared to what else is in that river. Some can swallow a human its true.

A 64 pound Flathead catfish in Lake Marion Santee SC.
It looked prehistoric and almost unreal looking , It was like having a big dawg or something on my stringer.
And was great eating BTW the best catfish I have ever had

My first salmon, it was in a river and I was 12 yrs old. It weighed 20-25lbs, and let me tell you, when those salmon decide to go downstream, you are in for a fight (and a chase). I got soaked up to my chest at one point but eventually reeled it in quite a ways downstream from where I hooked up with it. Another fisherman had to convince me to release it because it had it's fall colours and was no good to eat, which I knew, but I still had a tough time letting it go! What a rush!
