Even a cheapo piece should deserve some effort. If you have it fairly well sanded, I'd prime it with one coat and then paint it with an interior oil based paint. Oil based because you said it was pine, which is a very soft wood, and the fact that you are planning on using it in a cabin usually means there will not be a lot of heat year round in it. Oil paint will help protect the wood from moisture and humidty so that next year, you will still be able to get the drawers open. Got some cheap sponge brushes so you can throw everything away after painting.

Hi, you need to track down a product called Zebo. It comes in a tube (boxed). A local hardware store is more likely to have it than a DIY place.
Apply sparingly, according to the instructions, and you will need to spend a LOT of time polishing it up.
It needs regular reapplication, otherwise the finish tends to accumulate some surface rust.

If I had already gone to the trouble of stripping it to bare wood, I would put a good quality wood stain on it, color of your choice. Then when stain is dry, a good coat of varnish or some other sealant like polyurethane.

I'm sure that you can buy some stuff for this in places like homebase. If you dont have on near you, visit a fireplace showroom.

Bri-wax is the stuff.
or, depending on the type of wood,
you could Lime-wax it, this gives a whitish finish.

It depends what the material is: iron or wood.
If it`s wood you can stain it.
If it`s metal you can `black-lead` it.
