Some dogs bark at different ages. My Father had a Shepherd that didn't bark until he was 2 1/2 years and the first time he did it scared him and he didn't bark for another couple of weeks.
Now to teach your dog to bark/Speak on command. Set him up in a situation that he is most likely to bark and have a treat ready. Get him to bark and say the command and as soon as he makes a noise pop a treat in his mouth and praise. Be patient with him, and anytime he barks tell him "Good 'The command'"
I have a Sharpei that I can tell her to "Talk to me" and she will softly bark and make a roaring sound. Then I can tell her to "Speak" and she will bark out loud. They know the difference between "sit" and "down" so she knew the difference between "talk" and "speak". Dogs are very smart!!!!
There is nothing wrong with dogs doing tricks, to me and my dogs they have fun learning new thing, if you make it fun and entertaining. I love to see their reaction when they learn something new. You can actually see how it makes them happy.
Good Luck and be patient with your pet.

This is unusual!
You don't mention how old he is. Many young dogs don't find their voice until they are about 2/3 and full of adult confidence.
You will only confuse him by trying to make him bark in the way you have described. He just won't understand and will think you are crazy.
The way to get a dog to bark on command is to make him so excited he barks and then give lots of praise. Use the trigger word (eg bark) at the same. Repeated often enough, your dog will eventually associate the word you use with the bark.
So your challenge is getting him excited enough to bark in the first place! Give him lots of encouragement when he uses his voice for other things (you must know he isn't mute because he has been making other sounds).
Now try and get him in to the company of another dog that barks. there is nothing more thrilling for a dog than joint barking once they get going. Perhaps you have a friend with a dog that reliably barks at cats or squirrels up trees etc. This is the kind of situation which will prompt that bark from your dog.
Good luck getting him going!!

well to teach him to bark you will have to get him too bark - I must admit I wish my dog was quiet but I will make a few recomendations. If your dogs quite young he might just not have felt the need to yet my puppy didnt bark till he was about 9 months. What gets my dog to barkl is people at the front door a squeky toys. You could try something like that. I would be quiet surprised if your dog didnt bark while someone was at the door as they bark as a warning to tell you someone is there. You could look at the book its me or the dog - its a great book for general training. Sometimes dogs bark when they are excited so maybe get him to go daft by playing fetch lots or something like that. They also bark at danger my mums dog doesnt like it when someone pretends to hit someone with a newspaper (while the other person makes a crying noise) maybe try that -obviously dont hurt the person or the dog with the paper. Cant think of much more.

Be careful what you wish for - it might come true!
There's no point in saying "bark" to your dog because he doesn't know what the word means! You'll have to wait until he does bark and then say "bark", keep doing that & praise him when he does - but also make sure he'll shut up when you want him to as well or you might live to regret it! You don't say how old your dog is or how long you've had him, Dogs won't bark until they are old enough or secure enough to know that you are their owner & the house is their home which need protecting. Labs don't have much of a protection instinct anyway.

Did you just get your dog? I also have a black lab, and she didn't start barking for months. The best way to teach your dog would be to reward his good behavior. If your dog is not barking, trust me, he will, just be patient. And when your dog does, be prepared to give him a treat with lots of praise and scratches in all of his favorite places. When he eventually learns he gets lots of treats and attention for barking, he will do it more often. Then, you should be able to teach him on command. Good luck!

I can understand why you would want him to bark.
If you have a dog you would expect it to bark. If nothing else for joy but also for guard reasons.
It is baffling that you have a lab that wont bark. My lab always barked when she wanted something or when she herd something outside.
I do think that if you let him hang out with another dog that barks then he might get the uncontrollable desire to join in : )

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/530mZ
By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.
To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

Possibly he has a polyp on his vocal cords, or is just an obedient dog. Put another animal in front of him or the sound of a barking dog on a tape for him. I'm very jealous of you, actually. I have a moderately trained (its wearing off) wirehaired dachshund and he never shuts up. Even barks inside at the thin air.

You have to reward him. You have to condition him to think when you say "speak" he will be rewarded. This will take patience on your part. Have his favorite treat handy but don't give it to him. Try making him bark on your command. Once he does, give him the treat, but only and I mean only when he barks on your command. if he doesn't bark don't give him the treat or you'll just make it harder. This can be used to train a dog to do just about anything. Good Luck...

Your dog probably doesn't understand what you are asking him to do, so someone needs to show him.
If you have any friends whose dogs speak on command get them to do it in front of your dog a few times and he'll soon be repeating the trick.
People also learn well by watching...
