well its their business If they want to keep their lights up. I remember when I was a little girl. there was this family up the street from us whos son died at christmas time. they kept their decorations up all year long sort of like a memorial to him. Im telling you, the world kept spinning. Really!!!!!
If it bothers you that much then move to a stuck up high society neighborhood where you have to pay an assotiation fee and ask before you do things at your house..
btw: mabey your neighbors dont like the color your house is painted or the silly little garden knome that you put in your garden. Im sure there is something about you that may bug them.

Its really none of your business if they leave them up or not. I don't like seeing them up year round either but its not my house.
Are the owners an elderly sort? Perhaps they don't take it down because its easier on their health to keep them up.
If it bothers you THAT much, go over with some tea and a pie and offer to take them down (AND put them BACK UP) for them each year.

Aw, come on - live and let live, they could have much worse "decorations" for their house - a bit of Christmas spirit in May never hurt anyone

You could leave them a note saying that it bothers you (anonymously) but other than that there isn't anything you can do about how someone decorates their own property, that they own.
Your only recourse is if you live in an association where there are bylaws that dictate how you can decorate and/or for how long.

One of my neighbours has had newspaper on their window since about October and it has now gone a nice yellow colour! But, I am still alive and kicking as it has not done me or any of the other neighbours any harm. I don't find it embarassing, in fact it amuses me every time I see it, because I would love to knock on their door and ask 'why'? Then again, I have a life and suggest you find one yourself.

It depends on your city or if you live in a neighborhood with a home owners association. If so contact your city offices and see if they have any rules on this matter. If you have a Home owners association report it to them, they can deal with the situation without naming you as having reported them.
Now if they are just the white twinkling lights you may have a harder time getting them down as they can be construed as landscape lighting. Haven't you seen them at restraunts etc. The local 5 star resorts leave them up on trees year round.
Your friends/family know you can not control what your neighbors do or do not do on their own property.

Maybe they are just like my parents who are too old to be climbing up on ladders every year. My parents now just unplug them on New Year's Day. That way they're unlit until Thanksgiving of the following year when they are plugged back in. Maybe you should just go to their house one day and unplug the lights.

It's their front garden not yours! as long as they're not doing anything illegal or damaging to public health I'm afraid you just have to get over it! How would you react if someone told you how your house should look. Stop being so worried about what other people think!

Maybe you should simply offer to help them take them down. Say I made a promise to help out a neighbor this weekend to my friend's,co workers, school and I was wondering if I could help/ take down your lights for you. I can help you put them back up later on this year . My mom/dad/ whoever is afraid of heights so I always help them. Sometimes a couple of lies help a bit.
Good luck.
