I have a friend who got a black tattoo covered up with black and some dark purples and pinks. It didn't totally cover it but if your tattoo artist is clever they can incorporate some of the old one into the newone and use what they have there already. Make sure you research your artist and ask to see some pix of their previous cover ups.

Yes a good artist should be able to do somethin for you that isnt bigger black stuff. It is true they can cover black with lighter colours especially if your black is faded and older. Thay can work wonders go talk to a few an see what they say. Laser removal is good (expensive) but hurts quite a bit more then gettin the tattoo put on in the first place.

a dark navy blue should cover up the black tattoo but it depends on what you want to get and the talent of the artist who will be doing the coverup.

No. Generally speaking black ink must be covered with black ink. You can always get it lasered to lighten it and then cover it; that may give you more options. Other than that, black is really your only choice.

White ink over the black ink, then blue ink over the white ink. I have seen it done and I am in the process of having it done myself. It can be done!!!

You could try laser-surgery. It can lighten coloring, enabling a different color to go over it. May not be the most cost-effective thing to do...but then again, it is a tattoo.
