Chanukkah is an eight-day long holiday that occurs in December. It celebrates the victory of the Maccabbees and the miracle of oil in the temple lantern burning for eight days instead of only one. It celebrates a Jewish victory and a miracle of G-d. It is not the same day as Xmas, it lasts over a week. It also is not the same style of celebration. For Chanukkah, we light a menorah. A menorah (chanukkiah, in Hebrew) has 9 branches to hold candles, one candle for each night plus a ninth candle to light the other candles with. It looks like this: http://www.m-w.com/mw/art/menorah.gif
We light a candle every night to remember the 8 days that the oil burned in the Temple. Part of the Chanukkah Song goes: "and while we are playing the candles are burning low, one for each night they shed a sweet light to remind us of days long ago..."
It is traditional on Chanukkah to eat fried foods and play a game called dreidel (Hebrew, sivivon) for chocolate gold coins called gelt. Presents aren't usually a part of it but recently they have been.
Xmas is a Xtian celebrating that lasts one day celebrating the birth of JC. To celebrate, people put up Xmas trees and decorate them and then parents leave presents under the tree and said a man named Santa did it.
They are completely different.

that's an idea off of the right of my head, despite the indisputable fact that it contains attending to understand about the holidays at the same time as having relaxing. you are able to provide each and each student a chunk of structure paper, in all likelihood more beneficial than time-honored. Have them fold 3 sections, and label them christmas, hanukkah, and kwanzaa. then you definitely can both cut back them your self or have them cut back out diverse gadgets for diverse holidays, which include a christmas tree, menorah, dradle, kwanza candles, santa, or perhaps if else you are able to imagine of. Then have them glue down the diverse gadgets the position they imagine the vacation each and each merchandise corresponds to. Sorry if those instructions are not uncomplicated to appreciate, yet i'm hoping this helps!

Chanukah is a minor jewish holiday that gets blown way out of proportion do to it's proximity to christmas. They only reason gifts are given during chanukah is so that jewish children don't get jealous of christian children. Chanukah and Christmas have totally different meanings. Christmas is about celebrating the birth of jesus and being nice and giving gifts and all that. Chanukah is about fighting assimilation. My rabbi told me that the reason that chanukah lasts 8 days has nothing to do with oil, it's because the jewish people missed sukkot, another holiday that lasts 8 days, while fighting and decided to make it up by celebrating for 8 days afterwards. Remember, the real meaning of Chanukah is that jews will not assimilate, therefore, as a jew, I find it totally offensive when chanukah is called the jewish christmas.

There is absolutely no relationship between Hanukah and Christmas, other than that they occur in the same time of year. Anything else, is a corruption of them both, to satisfy the needs of retailers and greedy children.
