Why do so many of you believe that not choosing religion means not believing in a higher power? Religion is a human invention, with so many out there you can not conclusively ever say one is the right one, so believing in a higher power, has absolutley nothing to do with relgiioin. My question does not ask about the belief in God/HIgher power, i ask about religion. And it terms of religion gives morality, well do you think it was very moral when the spread of christinity was occuring and people where forced to be christian? or do u think its moral that through the centuries millions died in the name of religion?

Look at the postings on here. It is not fear that drives them but bragging they are better than thou. They are holier, better, and far superior to everyone else. Anyone who does not believe as they do is a fool and opposed to them!!
Hypocrites.

You are right about the same questions being posted repeatedly with the same general range of responses. Why don't you post some of those questions you think should be here? There will definitely be the usual knee-jerk responses, but there will likely be some interesting and thoughtful ones as well. Give it a try. Later: I see what you mean. Your questions deserve better than glib sarcasm or this-is-the-way-I- know-it-is-and- everyone-else-is-a-fool responses. Folks here tire of the same questions and the same responses so give blurt out the first thing that comes to them. Then, when a question comes along like yours that deserves thought and reflection, the glib-sarcasm mode is already in possession of people on all sides of the issue and is difficult to break free of. Maybe people have lost hope of ever communicating on a deep level here, although I see some who try and do come through sincere, thoughtful, and profound at times.

I do not believe that "religion" exists because people fear death or fear the unknown or because they question the fairness of life. Those are characteristics assigned to believers by non-believers.
Religion exist because people want to know:
• Why am I here?
• What is life?
• What happens after death?
• What is the difference between right and wrong?
• Why is there something instead of nothing?

In order for there to be fear of death, there has to be something that fears death, that is, some form of consciousness. Man is thus faced with four choices:
1) his consciousness has always existed (if so, why does he seem unaware of its eternal nature?);
2) his consciousness is merely an illusion (but if so, then there has to be some consciousness that is having this illusion);
3) his consciousness comes from atoms in a mechanistic universe that have no consciousness of their own and thus no consciousness to give (which is about as believable as getting blood from a turnip); or,
4) his consciousness comes from something outside the material universe that gave him his consciousness.
Why shouldn't people continue to choose the last choice as it is the most logical, whether it can be "proved" or not, even if there were no fear of death?

I don't fear death. Like most people I fear pain that may be associated with it but death itself.....no. And I am still a Christian. Part of why I don't fear death is because I know that absent from the body means present with the Lord.

Yes, it's a coping mechanism for many things other than fear of death and the unknown.
And there's also a dollar to be made from religion.

If they did not fear death.....I think religion would still be around because it not only exists out of fear, but it exists because people need to place some sort of value on their lives, to make them feel less miniscule and worthless. I have no dispute with it. Its fine, if people want to feel like they are worth something. I just don't believe in it.

I learned not to fear from religion because other things in life live because of fear. Insurance is a shallow solution.

It would still exist. It's an obviously useful tool to get unintelligent lemmings to do the bidding of a megalomaniacal madman under the guise of "in the name of god".
