Do you think this is from God? Or do you think this is demonic gibberish? What is your personal opinion?
I personally think that it is not necessary, and the original word for tongues was languages.

Tongues was prophesied by prophet Joel, in Joel 2:18-26
and fulfilled in Acts Chapter 2: Verses 2-4.
The tower of Babel - Genesis 11.
New Testament brought back in Acts Chapter 2. As the twelve apostles were given the HOLY SPIRIT, people of other countries could understand what was being said by them as they passed the Gospel to non-believers and those willing to listen.
The speaking in Tongues originated from Genesis 11. While Earth's only language was only Hebrew. After Noah's family survived the 40 days and 40 nights continuous flood. A descendant of Shem, Ham or Japheth had an idea of trying to create a tower higher than we could imagine. Because they were working so much and hard at their attempt, all appeared to agree with each other. That God sent an angel to stop their attempt of creating the tower of Babel. The angel multiplied the languages, from only Hebrew. And so the people that spoke with "their new language", formed countries across all seven continents. That tower was in ancient Babylon.

Yes, in the original manifestation of speaking in tongues, the languages were not native to the speakers, but were recognizable to people of other languages. Paul speaks of two types of tongues. Understandable and not. So, it is from God. It can seem like gibberish, but sometimes it's not. Whether it is necessary today or not, that is still in question with many scholars of the Bible.

Some religions believe that it is demonic gibberish others believe it is a sign of holy spirit.
From what i have read in the bible only some were effected by holy spirit at one specific time and started to speak in tongues so i dont believe it is from that source now as these things happened when jesus was on the earth to demonstrate his power came from God there is no need for them now but i know others do believe in it.
You are right in that tongues are languages but when this event happened the people concerned started to talk in tongues they did not know before.
There are also programmes on tv where people see their ability to talk a language they have never learned before as a sign that they have lived before but personally i think all of this just confuses people even more.
It all boils down once again to what you believe to be true.

Speaking in tongues is a gift from the Holy Spirit. It is the only gift that everybody has and anyone can perform. This is the way your soul prays to God. Your soul needs to be "fed" just like the brain needs to be "fed" information for it to grow. Tongues is the way your spirituality grows obviously together with more things like communal prayer, Mass etc. You shouldn't be scared of it coz it does come from God and it is necessary. Also you might even have someone who can interpret what the person speaking in tongues is saying. This is interpretation of tongues which is also a gift from God.

Speaking in tongues is considered one of the gifts of God. It is when someone has been touched by the holy spirit that they are able to do so. Much like how some people have had the gift of prophecy, etc. The fact of the matter is, it is not something bad if it is truly the holy spirit present.

I have been to Baptist pentacostal churches that speak in toungues. One in Boston Watertown Mass.
this is a gift =took me years before I got it-and like any gift it can be abused -if you do get it and are alone-in a time of thankfulness to God with the prayer-Jesus help me to do your will about toungues and if I am not willing to do it change my will so I will be willing to do it
then still pray and as bubbles begin on your tongue and lips and words come out-when u pause after a sentence -ask the Lord to tell you each sentence what was said by you
be carefull and try the Spirit by the Spirit-and never let another person direct your life through their words-take it to the Word of God and confirm it.
i just got a short toungues sentence Bubaska ...... and asked- and came back "you are my dear children, relax."

In scripture, when one is seen speaking in tongues it is because for the one that was there that couldn't understand the original language that was being spoken. Thus the 'unknown tongue' - one that they originally didn't know or studied to learn.
1Co 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to the ones believing _but_ to the unbelieving ones, but prophesy [is] not for the unbelieving ones _but_ for the ones believing. (Analytical Literal Translation)
Today, many see it as the exact opposite and as the only sign of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit - which couldn't be further from the truth.

When an imperial power goes to capture a colony it tries to change their culture, language and what not. The same way as we are the members of the kingdom of God we have a special language to communicate with God. Don't we have code languages to speak to our dear ones so is this. I speak in tongues and it is a reality and also is powerful.
Don't say it is demonic!! Beware!!

Many speak in tongues, driven by the HS.
But many speak just gibberish (and claim that they are speaking in tongues), driven by their fanatism.
The difference is that those really speaking in tongues will be understood by people who speak a different language, but ratatatatatatatattata does not mean anything un any lnguage

I agree JoJo, I am never comfortable with this and see no sense or reason to it,I agree also that speaking in tongues is the gift of language not this as you say gibberish.
This speaking in tongues seems to be elitist in nature and you really only get accepted as a serious charismatic when you can do it too.
I personally think it is dangerous.
