Is it another Christian ploy to incorporate earlier ancient beliefs and stories into their own mythology?

Christianity has always incorporated local gods, goddesses and other figures into its secondary pantheon. The tripartite goddess becomes the Trinity (maiden, mother, crone (wisdom) --> virgin son, father, holy spirit). Mary takes on attributes of the tripartite goddess as well. And plenty of the individual ones. Check out what follows Our Lady of ... in church names and see if you can spot the Greek goddess with the same epithet.

And way too many gods become saints to list.

They demonized the Great God Pan and used his image for their Satan. He must have been one of the more important ones.

I am sure Satan has a good laugh every time that picture comes up. The image is ridiculous and promotes a willingness to deny Satan's existance. That is what he wants. It allows him to work more easily.

i'm a christian, and i've often wondered the same thing. i guess the answer is because there's not a real accurate description of satan's physical appearance in the bible. it says that lucifer (meaning ''day star'', or ''morning star'')was perfect in his beauty, but that was before he was cast out of heaven, before he became satan (''enemy'' or ''adversary'').

I think it was originally to demonize the pagan "horned god."
