Acid reflux, otherwise known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a chronic condition mainly affecting the stomach and esophagus. As you probably know, there is acid in our stomachs to break down the food we digest, and really the only thing preventing that from coming up back up into our esophagus is the lower esophageal sphincter or LES, which is a bunch of muscles that constrict that opening normally. If the LES is not working correctly for whatever reason (there is no one cause responsible for GERD), then you have acid backflowing into the esophageal area and repeated exposure can cause breakdown of the tissue. Most people diagnosed with GERD usually list severe heartburn or even chest pain as symptoms. Sometimes, people will say they suffer heartburn when going to bed, difficulties or even pain w/swallowing, lots of burping or belching, or even frequent sore throats can also be indicators, but there is even the type of reflux that can be listed as asymptomatic. Unfortunately, once you are diagnosed w/GERD, you will have to be on medication for the rest of your life. Treatment will include meds (PPIs which will inhibit or decrease the amt of acid secretion in your stomach), change in lifestyle (i.e. decreasing the pressure in your abd. area by wearing loose-fitting clothing and avoiding too much bending, decreasing your consumption of foods and drink that can exacerbate the condition like caffeine, and sleeping in an elevated position to help decrease likelihood of backflow of acid into the esophagus by changing the angle of your body), and in the worst case scenario where it may develop into Barrett's esophagus (a condition which may develop into an esophageal cancer), repeated visits to receive upper endoscopic procedures ranging from every few months to every couple of years, depending on your GI doc and your condition status. The only way to really determine whether you have reflux or not is to go in and have an upper endoscopic procedure, otherwise known as an EGD, which can normally be arranged with your primary physician. If you suspect you have it, you should get tested right away, especially if you have the more serious characteristics of GERD. As far as where you get it, that is something that can be more determinedly decided when speaking w/the GI doc and what (s)he sees in doing the procedure and speaking w/you about your current lifestyle habits. Like I said, there is no one known cause, but talking to your doc about what to do might be the next best course of action. Hope this helps.

Acid Reflux, also called GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disorder) is where the gastric acids refluxes (the stomach contents pass) into the esophagus. This is usually caused by the muscle at the connection point of the stomach and esophagus is incompetent, or does not close properly.

Several websites are promoted by pharmaceutical companies, thus they are geared to a specific medication for GERD. Below is a link to Medlineplus, it is a website controlled by the National Institute for Health. It should give you the most unbiased information about the condition and common treatment modalities.

It's when stomach acid comes up into the esophagus.

Like heartburn, but often recurring, such as if there is a problem with the sphincter muscle that normally keeps your stomach contents down.

If you think you have it, get it checked by a doctor, because the acid in your stomach is hydrochloric acid, which over time can do more damage to your esophagus.

when you eat something heavy and feel uneasy, you say it is problem of acidity and take some anta-acid.
When your digestive system is damaged to the extent that acids (or rather undigested part of food) start reaching the esophagus portion, it is acid reflux.
Such situation call for consulting a Doctor immediately other wise problem will grow worse.

You should ask your doctor that and then come back and tell us because now you have us curious. I dream when I over eat (I no longer have acid reflux) so it seems reasonable to think that way.

When the acid in your stomach comes up your esophagus because the flap that is supposed to keep it in your stomach doesn't work so hot. It is painful and can seriously damage your esophagus if it isn't treated. Get to the doctor as soon as possible if you have this. Good luck!!!
