I assume you are referring to the destruction of the temple by the Romans which occured in 70 A.D. Jesus foretold of this event, warning Christians to escape Jerusalem before the Romans attacked Jerusalem.
Luke 21
20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.
21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

the oral tradition regarding jesus and his followers were practiced until the written word. this was quite popular and more effective in the time time and culture it involves. at around the forty year period the letters were beginning to be written and some aspects of the gospel were beginning to be formulated. people being able to read at that time wasn't normal and oral tradition was practiced almost flawlessly. some sites of interest.......

They had to figure out how a prophet of god ended up on a cross. So they came up with the whole, jesus is the son of god who died for us line of crap.
