If you get a new computer with it and it comes with a printer and a sound card and all that, have the techs where you get set up the computer and you will do fine.
If you have a computer already, stay with XP. Vista doesn't come with all the support operating commands that XP has. If you install a printer on a computer with XP, chances are that XP will have the driver for it already and set it up for you. If you install Vista, it doesn't come with any drivers and you will spend a long time to get that printer to work, even if you have a disk for that printer. The same goes for sound cards and graphic cards and any other cards that may be in your computer.
Plus if you have a computer already, you may have to do some serious upgrades just to get Vista to work.
Look at some of the past question on here about Vista and you will see what kind of problems people are having.

Well, XP has been around for years and every one is familiar with it and lot of programs work just fine with in it and the support I believe has been extended for another 7 years.

While Vista is brand new and still has some teething problems although over time this will smooth out. There are known compatibility issues with some software/hardware and Vista.

It really depends on what you plan to do with you computer and if the hardware can run Vista.

Ever thought about trying Linux?

VISTA is new and has a few teathing problems, mainley with drivers. There is a site that has all the Vista drivers. As to which is better is hard to answer. It depends on what you want to do with your PC. If XP does the job you want it to do, then there is no need to upgrage to VISTA. VISTA has more features then XP, but most are just eye candy. Vista is better at handling pictures downloaded from your camera.
The proplem with XP is too many updates after you install it. Microsoft needs to come out with SR-3.
It all comes down to what you want to do on the PC.

I think XP is better because my Bf got Vista a few weeks ago and it had been giving him nothing but problems! Like the sound on his computer wont work half the time and I doesn't support quick play on his computer!

Xp is a perfectly fine version of windows. With proper security it is safe. Vista's main brag was better security, but was hacked even b4 it was on the shelves. Decide 4 urself but to me the cost far outweighs the need.

Unless you plan to buy a new PC with Vista installed, stick with XP, on your old PC, for now.

Vista drivers for printers, scanners, web cams, etc. are not readily available yet. If buying new, check for drivers first.

When the hardware vendors catch up, feel free to get on board.

I speak from painful experience!

well no doubt xp
i work at a university and we are not allowed to have vista since it is not as good for work, and has still bugs to be fixed. even though vista seems really cool, wait for another year minnimum. trust me it will make life much harder. if you want to you can dual boot it but thats a whole different story, and you can do this also with linux

Define "better". "Better" for me is Linux, because of my requirements, preferences and other criteria.

XP has more supported applications and hardware, but support for it ends next year.

Vista is ... prettier, maybe.

What are your criteria?
