I have found lots about the first electric steam irons invented in the 1950s, but I can't find when the modern day irons, made of plastic, were invented. Does anyone have any ideas?!

that is because the iron is not made from plastic. plastic is used as the water holding tank only. the pressure foot is still iron (or actually steel) although it may have a teflon coating so it has a plastic appearance.
