You can't actually say 40 or 100 Hz. That frequency describe the type of wave that is playing. Bass notes are waves with low frequencies and high notes like treble and cymbals are high frequencies. When you set a equalizer or crossover for bass you lower the frequency, if you set to high treble and mid's increase the frequency. So in conclusion while lower the freq. the stronger the bass , while higher the freq. higher the treble.
Just a fact the human hearing frequency range is from 20 Hz to 20K Hz

just for reference, 41.5 hz is the low note on a standard tuned bass guitar. So, 40hz covers everything generally played in rock or rap or anything else, except music made to accentuate deep bass. 100 hz is just below a on the bass( the second string down, so if you speaker played only down to 100hz, the low bass notes would not be as low as the middle area notes. The kick of a bass drum is usually around 60-80 hz, so if you want to"thump, this is where you turn up the eq, but if you want to rumble, 40 hertz is where it's at.

If your talking what to set the LPF to, make it 100Hz as it will allow anything 100Hz and below to pass or be heard. 40 Hz will limit it to 40Hz and below.

for a sub or a speaker? personally i like deep bass more so 40hrz is better to me, cause its a lot deeper. but i look for subs that go down to 20hrz, cause i like to feel those notes as well. but if your asking about speaker specs and one goes down to 100hrz and one 40hrz. go with the 40 every time. just based on those specs of course. you should also actually listen to the speaker as well.
good luck

Most bass coming from a subwoofer should fall between those two numbers.

In Europe I tend to go with 50Hz, but in the US, 60Hz works just fine. I like to stick to the basics.
