Are there any hives of any kind? A lukewarm bath with oatmeal in it may help as well.

I ain't proffesional in this but i suggest scabies ! (if that severe scratching was accompanied by rash) ...
shower with baby gel or lotion .. and if you suspect allergy, take Loratidine tablets (10mg) = Claritine.

Benadrill (sp?) works WONDERS, but will make you drowsy, so watch out!! Also, an oatmeal paste can sooth itchiness as well!! Good luck.
