In Matt 16:13-17 it tells how the name Christ came:
"Jesus asked His disciples,'who do people say that I am?', They said, "Some say John the Babtist, other say Elijah or Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
"But who about you?" He asked them, "Who do you say that I am?"
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, son of the Living God"
Jesus replied,"Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh & blood, but by My Father who is in Heaven. Now I tell you, Peter shall be your name and on this rock, I will build My Church"

Jesus Means Savior

First of all, the word "Christ" comes from "christos", a Greek word meaning "anointed". It is the equivalent of the word "moshiach", or Messiah, in Hebrew. But what does that mean? To be anointed is literally to have sacred anointing oil poured on one's head because God has chosen the person for a special task. Kings were anointed during their coronation rather than receiving a crown. Even though prophets and priests were anointed, the phrase "anointed one" or "the Lord's anointed" was most often used to refer to a king. So, the main picture of the word "Messiah" or "Christ" as the "anointed one" was of a king chosen by God. Even though we tend not to pick up on the cultural pictures, the gospels tell us many times that Jesus is this great King who has come. During Jesus' trial, the main question that He is asked is "Are you the King of the Jews?", and He answers affirmatively:

"Christ" is our English term derived from the Greek term "Christos". It is the translation of the Hebrew term "Messiah", which does mean anointed one. Anointing with oil is not just a ceremony, it means the person was set aside for a certain purpose or position. You can look up these terms in "concordances" to see how they were used in all places they appear in the Bible.

Jesus, Joshua, and Hosea are all forms of that same name which does mean savior.

Christ is Greek for Messiah a Hebrew word. They mean anointed. Being anointed refers to being appointed according to the custom of having oil poured out upon one's head.

Thus there were many kings and high-priests appointed as christs or messiahs in Israel. However, only one was anointed with God's holy spirit in the form of a dove to be God's son. He is thus the ONLY CHRIST AND MESSIAH in that sense.

Messiah is Hebrew not Latin while Christ is from the Greek word "Cristos" and [like many other words] became part of the English language.

My bible dictionary says this about the name Christ:CHRIST, n. THE ANOINTED; an appellation given to the Savior of the World, and synonymous with the Hebrew Messiah. It was a custom of antiquity to consecrate persons to the sacerdotal and regal offices by anointing them with oil.

Christ and Messiah both mean "anointed one". One is in Latin and the other is in Greek. I think. But you should double check this with another source.
