i have fairly thick, waist legnth hair. how do i do it in a cute messy bun without it looking to bulky or dull??

Divide it into two sections. Braid one and use that for the core of the bun. Use a scrunchy to secure the rest over the braided core.

I think with waist-long hair your bun would definitely look bulky. Maybe get a trim?

you won't be able to not have a big bun cause you have alot of hair unless you put it in a ponytail first and then twist to messy bun
