I am overweight but equally proportioned. I just started last week but I am worried that my legs will get toned and fit and the rest of my body won't. Or will my body burn the calories and take from places equally? Should I excersize at a lower resistance or a higher one?

I spend an hour on my stationary bike every day, doing about 30kms an hour.. spendin more on low tension and then gradually increasing it to high tension for about 20minutes in all. It certainly works plenty of muscle from waist down but arms dont do much. So I do power walking in the evening for about 45mins with 2kg dumbells in each hand... waiving them around wildly (okay that's an exaggeration!!).

But the combination of biking whilst reading morning papers and walking off the day stress in the evening has worked on the whole body muscle pack as well as the general stamina of this couch potato!!

Experience talking mate :-)

do you notice that when you bike, you dont' just use your legs muscles. When i bike, especially uphill, i feel the muscles on my hip and back are working. Plus my biceps and triceps.

So i believe the whole body can be toned equally.

genetics determines where body fat is lost from regardless of the mechanics of the exercises performed.

you should exercise at a comfortable pace for several weeks, then slowly increase the intensity

swimming is best as it will tone up everywhere.

cycling is good though. you will lose fat from everywhere but only your legs will tone up, not so much your arms.

dont go too hard. for weight loss better to go lighter for longer - the longer you go, the more fat you will burn. going off road with hills will burn fat more too rather than the flat.
