I'm sick with some sort of cold or flu, and the congestion in my head is really bad. I've already taken NyQuil but it's not helping. It's the middle of the night so I can't really go out and buy anything, but the pressure in my ear is killing me, the pain is almost unbearable. Are there any home remedies that can help with this? I'm desperate!

Depends on what you have on hand.
A few drops of Hydrogen Peroxide in either ear will sometimes help, but if you have some fresh garlic on hand, that will work even better. I usually take a clove of garlic and slice of a few small pieces, placing each piece into both of my ears. Wonderful! And if you have a serious infection, you won't reek of garlic, because the odorous compounds of the garlic will be focused on combating the bacterial invasion instead of stinking up your life. If you don't have garlic now, then I would certainly advise you to keep a head of garlic handy for future use; it can keep for months in the crisper of your refrigerator.
For one, it doesn't sound like either the cold or the flu, but the start of an upper respiratory infection, aggravated by seasonal allergies. I am going to leave off with a helpful link.
Best of Luck!

I grew up (and remained) susceptible to bronchial infections, viruses and anything else that can cause chest congestion, coughing and any other issue with respiratory issues. The following are the conclusions I have come to. 1) At the first sign of respiratory problems (painful, deep unproductive coughing) I immediately begin upping the vitamins (Airborne works wonders, especially mixed with one packet of EmergencyC), every three hours. If possible, I also get the largest pot in the kitchen, fill it half way up with water, cover with lid and bring to a boil. Then, add Eucalyptus Oil (not too much the first time) and replace lid. I cover my head and the pot with a large towel (preferably sitting), remove the lid from the hot water and proceed to inhale the steam for as long as I can. This, I have found to be the most effective way to break up the congestion. I repeat this process every 2 – 3 hours, or as often as possible. 2) Tea. 2 ginger tea bags, honey, lemon and ginger powder, all mixed with boiling water. I like to drink this as much as possible. Fluids (no milk) really aids with washing the congestion out of the system. 3) When I have to put in long days at work with the horrible and painful cough, I do often result to cough syrup. Robitussin DM (Or generic brand) works wonderful. As well as Vicks 44 (green label… cough suppressant only, no expectorant because it often encourages and induces the cough, as the expectorant breaks up the congestion). 4) If cough persists more than 7 days, antibiotics are necessary. However, if you can catch it soon enough, often the steam and fluids with the vitamins and rest often prevent it from getting too bad. Feel better soon :o)

Put a pan of water on the stove and get it boiling. Remove it, sit the pan on the table and make a tent over your head and the pan with a towel and breath in the steam. It will help get things moving and get your nose running. If you have any Vicks Vapo Rub, put a spoonful of that into the boiling water and let it melt. Or if you have any essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus put that into the water. If you can get your sinuses to start running, it may help with the earache.

Don't take Nyquil anymore, try taking a antihistamine with a nasal decongestant like Claritin D or Alavert D. Take some ibruprofen for the ear ache.

Here in Australia there is only one relief for head congestion. If you can get it put a tablespoon of eucalypt oil into a bowl of boiling water then enhale the vapor. Please note this is only a relief remedy. You should still consult your docter as you may also have picked up an infection.

Poor thing. Carefully fill a pan or bowl with hot water. Lean over the water (not in the water) and slowly breath in the hot steam. You can put a towel over your head to keep the steam in. Or...you can just take a nice hot shower! Breathe deeply! I hope you feel better soon.
Another suggestion, if you have any of those Breathe Easy strips available, they work.

here is an old home remedy - it involves raw apple cider vinegar - you can get it in a health food store an the brand i use is called Bragg's - heat about three tablespoons in a cup of boiling water - take a towel and when the mixture is boiling hot use it like a sauna. drape the towel over your head and lean over the pan of hot water - also this make sound gross but it worked for me - get an old nasal spray bottle - clean it out. but the mixture of raw vinegar and water in the spray bottle and use it instead of the caustic chemicals they use to shrink the nasal lining of the sinuses...those chemicals are very harmful and even addictive.... Believe this or not in the old days there was always a bottle of raw vinegar on the table;e and was used on everything during a meal. I even Drink this mixture of one to one vinegar to raw honey and ( 1 tablespoon to 1 tablespoon) and make a hot tea out of it to cleanse the stomach and colon. Its wonderful and very healthful.
Hope you try it.

Try hanging out in the bathroom with the shower running on hot. Breath in a lot of steam. Maybe even get into the shower (of course not on hot).

You might also do well by getting some saline nasal spray. I don't personally think it's as effective as the steam, but my wife likes it more.

6-8 glasses of pure water daily is excellent for a healthy body. Take 2 tbls. of heinz apple cider vinegar in a glass of water for its 93 vitamins and minerals. Vinegar gets rid of any infection. I have not had a cold/flu/illness since I started my regimen of vinegar and water. Also, read the cayenne pepper website. A 1/2 tsp. along with the vinegar and water is great for getting rid of whatever ails you. Hope you feel bette soon. Read the "dehydration" website for more info.

Try rubbing vicks near your nostrils, than run a hand towel under hot water, rinse it and cover your face, try to breath deeply. If you don't have vicks, the hot towel alone should help too.
