Not all dogs hate cats, not all cats hate dogs.
Some dogs would want to play, some with a high prey drive might try to kill. Eating the cat....not likely.
Some cats love dogs if they are raised with them. Some cats will attack dogs on sight.
My dogs live with my cat peacefully, but I trained them that way.
They might chase and kill a strange cat, so I don't let them.

I had a cat that grew up with my dogs, which made her unafraid of other dogs and my neighbours dog killed her. They dont kill cats for food just for the thrill of it.I have 2 cats now that love my dogs but not allowed out on there own,My husband built a huge cat pen,and they have a huge tree to climb (a huge fig tree)but they cannot reach the wildlife as my husband put chicken wire right around tree. They have a ball in there and they cannot get wheel disease or killed by other peoples dogs......Liz

They don't all hate cats. For awhile we had 3 cats and 1 dog. 2 cats died at 14y/o, leaving us with 1 cat and 1 dog. We now have 3 dogs. 2 German Shepard/Rottweiler mix and a chihuahua mix and 1 cat. They all get along fine.

My dog didn't have any cat housemates until she was 9 years old. She was great with all of the cats I brought home. Their behavior with cats will be dependent on their prey drive and the leadership given by the owner.

They usually get along well enough if they're raised together. But a dog's natural instinct is to look at a cat (a smaller animal) and see prey.

Many dogs, years ago were taught to hunt small animals.
But I have both a dog and cat, got them at the same time as babies and they get along fablous.
But my dog, which is a poodle mix wants to EAT my birds - it seems poodles were breed to hunt small birds. She will not leave them alone, if my back it turned she will be trying to tip over the cage.

its instinct, they are animals and on diferent levels of the food chain. Cats are a threat to dogs, quiet, sneaky and cats are hunters. Both animals are territorial. the same reason cats hunt lizzards, and cops hunt robbers..
