It could be an eye injury or conjunctivitis. Since the eyes are so sensitive, this is not something you should wait around on. Fortunately, it will probably relatively inexpensive to treat.
You say you don't think your cat is in pain, but he may be painful or at least be feeling a LOT of irritation in that eye. Cats often mask their symptoms, so by the time they're "acting" sick, they've been sick for a while.

I would call the vet IMMEDIATELY! (OK not in the middle of the night, but in the a.m.)...He could have caught a kitty cold, early signs of distemper or other ICKY illness, or have gotten into a chemical of some kind. Or got a foreign object in it and injured his eye (scratched cornea?) Be sure to wash his sleeping pad. His sleeping more could be a symptom of pain. Consider what his eating/appetite and how he seems to be getting around (vision)?
Good luck, I'll be praying for your fur baby.

Maybe he has something in his eye. Wipe the eye with a damp cotton ball, nose outward. This might help. Cats can get conjunctivitis, too, so you might have to contact the vet. Some upper respiratory infections start with symptoms in the eye.

He may have scratched it or has an infection. If not better by morning, time to a trip to the vet.
