technically the one that you are most efficient at performing is what's optimum for you. the mechanics of the exercises are completely different so a trained athlete in one may not perform at or near the same level in the other.
both are good for weight management with a sound diet. for optimum fitness performing both would be best

It depends on what you need to be in shape for. If you want total shape for your entire body, then swimming is the best, but if you want a little more muscle than shape, running would be best.

All exercise is helpful, so you are on the right track. Swimming would be the best full body workout and would help your cardiovascular stregth more than running. To get the most production out of your muscles you need to make sure that they have plenty of carrbs to burn and drink plenty of water as well. I found this site to be very helpful:
http://www.jigsawhealth.com. The bars and nuts were great! try it out.

Swimming is easier on your joints.. Less likely to injure your self that way.. I think swimming would be a better way. There are a lot more things to do in the water, to target other muscle groups...

What kind of shape you desire?
Running will lose your pounds more efficiently but prolonged running will wear your joints(knee) easily.
Swimming goes easy on your joints, it helps to lose pounds and tones your upper body(depending on what stroke you use).
My advice to you, do both, alternate your exercises to avoid staleness in your routine. this way it keeps you going for longer.
Eat healthy and Good Luck!

i think they both do a pretty good job,but i would think running would burn more calories, from sweating.
