I had a Toyota truck with a 22R engine and thought it was generally a nice rugged engine with a lot of staying power. I never tried off-roading with it, but if you keep up your preventative maintenance it should hold up pretty well.
How good a Toyota truck is off road will depend a lot on the truck and what it's designed to do. I think most of the light trucks are a bit too fragile for much off-roading, but they can be beefed up with better suspensions and appropriate tires.
It's like any other vehicle. The Land Cruiser, of course, is designed for off roading and is an excellent vehicle for that purpose, and is pretty good on the highway. Forerunner is probably pretty good. Most of your full-sized Toyota trucks should be pretty good, but you are going well beyond the 22R with these vehicles.

The 22r is a mule of a motor. doesn't make killer power stock, but with regular maintenance and upkeep will last...well no one really knows. In my 15 years of Toyota hands on exp, I've seen dozens and dozens of 5,6,7 hundred thousand mile 22r's. As far as off roading goes well go to any ohv area and try to count how many toyota's are out there. Likely 3 to 1 of any other make.

Toyota are unreal offroad BUT stay away from 18R or 22R engines. Multiple timing chains, guides and tensioners make this motor unreliable.
If you must have 4 cylinder then get a 3Y or 4Y from HIACE, it will bolt in.
4Y is 2.2L and is unkillable. Mine has done 425,000km(265,500miles) and uses no oil or water.
