I have a male and a female dog (neutered and spayed). Each time the female urinates the male immediately urinates on top of where she did (understandable...normal dog behavior). What I don't understand is why he licks the grass where she urinated before he marks his spot on top of hers.

Anyone else have a dog that does this? Any ideas as to why he does this?

Interesting, I guess I've just never seen this behavior.

Along with scent, the taste of the urine a female leaves determines whether she is in season and at what stage of the season she is in. I would guess that your neutered male was neutered after 7 months and has some experience with females in season.

I know it seems gross to us, but to a dog it's just another way of experiencing the world. We can't even begin to imagine the world of senses that dogs live in...smell, hearing, taste... Which is why we shouldn't judge them by our standards.

What your dog is doing is totally natural. He is simply 'tasting' the female's hormones and other information about her. And yes, many dogs do this!

My dogs urinate on top of each other...
no big deal...

Don't worry about what all they do... it's part of being a dog.

I agree with luvrat....I have two spayed females they smell, lick and pee on top of each others spot. ITS THEIR WORLD!

Pee licking is very common. Lots of dogs do that. I believe it is affiliative.

He's being a bit dominant. He licks to check her health and if she is in season...it's a dog thing.
