It sounds like you are an earth-tone kind of person. I am as well. I would be consistent with your colors throughout your home but each room could have a different color on top of your neutrals such as Salmon, soft pale blue, pale yellows,.... let your imagination take you. It will all look great once you start. I would definitely throw in some colors though.

It is okay to use those colors for a base. Maybe have sage green in every room. Paint LR sage green, have brown sofa and tan carpet, yellow accents. Paint Dining room yellow, but make sage green on one wall or below chair rail, keep tan carpet. Put orange or red accents. Make kitchen yellow and sage green with white. Make bedroom tan and brown with
sage in a print on bedspread, yellow pillows. Make bathroom all white, with towels in sage green and one
yellow vase on counter.
Just don't paint the whole place sage. Use a different amount of it in each area.

I have similar problems - I love sage/ green colors and lavender / purples and find that my ideas for every room in the house lean to those colors. I don't know about your house but in mine all of the main living space (kitchen , dining room, hallway and living room) flows into each other so for everything to flow nicely, I do have to stick to similar colors in all the rooms. I find that if I use different shades of the same colors and go with different themes for each room - different colored accents- it works well - everything flows but it is not all the same and monotonous.
I would definitely go with very different colors for rooms that are not part of the main living space. The bathroom and bedroom don't have to coordinate with the rest of the house. These are rooms that guests will have limited or no use of so you can go as wild or as different in those rooms as you want.
I have various shades of sage and purples through the main living space. I am temped to use those colors in my bedroom but I am really trying to be brave and go with something somewhat different. I am going to do blue, white and yellow in my bathroom and burgundy and taupes in my office.
Color schemes were difficult for me at first because growing up- every house we lived in , everything was always painted white or eggshell and my parents never did any decorating.
Don't be afraid to try something you would not normally think you would like, once you get it on the wall you might be surprised- and nothing is permanant - you can alwas paint over it.

Pick your three favorite - [or your two and husb's one ] colors for the 'public' rooms like living, dining, kitchen, family room, halls. Make different combos of these colors- ex:
a] green with yellow and a little brown
b] yellow with brown and a little green
c] brown with green and a little yellow
Consider what furniture/carpets will be exposed to kids - might want to make them the darker tones of the room.
Kids should decorate their favorite colors in their bed and bathrooms.
Pick a metal [ brass, silver, bronze ] or wood [ oak, maple, mahogany ] for picture frames mirror frames, etc. that matches so you can re-arrange them in different rooms or areas.
House won't be all 'matchy' but will have a great 'flow'.

you can pick one color as the scheme. say sage green. you can have the walls in every room in different colors but in the same family or shade green. pick colors that will meld each room together and have the accents in a different hue. throw browns and taupes and maybe cream for the bathroom, play with yellow and orange accents in the kitchen. i would pick maroon, red and black for the living room to get a more cosy feel. you can also paint your room navy blue and accent it with a sage green carpet or rug and black furnitures and nickel accents

I would strongly advise against doing a different colour per room for a few reasons, one if you decide to swap rooms with anyone and they don't like it they may want to re paint it, if you sell the property , this is offputting to some people, and some colour scemes do not mix with certin accessories.
No 1 rule is simple walls, attractive accessories that can be changed if your mood changes. A feature wall in a living area can give a nice effect just not on every wall, use cushions e.g. if you like sage green that in a feature wall(providing the other house members agree) and differnt ranging green coloured cushions, electric blue looks very striking with sage green, mustard use sparingly as it is a very strong colour, mustard and brown can look very drab, but mustard and charccol grey look nice with burgandy. keep in mind the colours you currently have with yout furniture, is it dark or light wood, is it pewter, put light cushions and accessories with dark furniture like cedar and hardwood and darker accessories with light wood like oak and pine, bright colours with white painted furniture, do you want a theme like sea scene, beach scene or something sophisticated, do you have children that need to be considered if you do, pick fabrics that can be washed, so no velvet, silk, suede or shantung as these fabrics need to be dry cleaned, 100% leather is hard to keep looking good with kids as it should be cleaned with saddle soap every one to two weeks so consider a leather combination. choose paint that is washable water based paints will dry faster and are easier to paint over than oil based ones.

It's not necessarily bad to have a consistent color scheme throughout your house, but I certainly understand the need for variety. Sounds like we might have similar taste, and I find myself wanting to choose the same colors in home decor over and over again!
I have focused on redecorating specific areas of my house in different colors. My guest bathroom is pale taupe and had celadon green mats/shower curtain/et cetera. I switched to dark taupe mats and a linen shower curtain with large block-printed tropical leaves (in natural colors). I also swapped out the standard mirror for one with a gold-leaf frame. It went from super-neutral to a sort of jungle-deco look, but still feels modern. I repainted my master bath and half-bath in a wedgewood blue with bright white trim. That lends itself well to a beach or spa theme.
Working in cooler colors like blue has had the effect I was looking for in my own house. Also, adding MORE of the colors you like, but in different shades looks interesting and eclectic - for example, choose throw pillows for your living room in multiple shades of tan/brown instead of having them all match.
Good luck!

Go to HGTV.com, they have something called "Rate my space', it's really neat because people have sent in pics of their bedroom, kitchen, laundry room, livingroom and I have gotten some great ideas from the pics. People are very creative and it was really neat to see all the different ideas.
