I think this is a combination of an unsatisfactory result coupled with a civilian government. Both the prime minister and the defense minister had no real upper military training, while the head of the army came from the air force, not the infantry. As such, people felt it would have come out had more informed people been leading. There is no doubt however that hizbullah sustained more damage than Israel did, and I thnk the outcome of the conflict is much more beneficial to Israel. Yes, perhaps hizbullah has gained some popularity on the Lebanon street, but there is a reasonbly large UNIFIL force patrolling the border, providing some degree of deterance. The truth is Hizbullah is no longer on Israel's northern border, and that's a victory to me.

EDIT: Enough of this "fighting on Israel's soil" garbage. THERE WAS NO FIGHTING ON ISRAELI SOIL! There were rockets that fell, not fighting. This has happened many times in the past to Israel; Syria especially enjoyed bombarding northern Israel before they lost the Golan Heights. I'm sorry if this is supposed to give you hope for the next confrontation against Israel, but the simple fact of the matter is that there is no lesson to learn from this for an arab country. The only reason things turned out this way was because Israel was not at war with Lebanon and thus did not want to fully invade. If Syria, a country, pulled this kind of stunt, things would turn out much differently. Furthermore, if this is the bar you set for victory, mainly Israelis needing to leave their homes fora couple of weeks, then you're deluding yourself to the grandeur of it all. Once upon a time an arab victory meant the annihilation of Israel, utter destruction. That was foreseen as an attainable goal; now you seem to say simply surviving after provoking Israel is a victory. I would suggest making peace before the definition of victory becomes any less impressive.

Merely the fact that they deal with this issue ever since the war was over, means that they feel insecure of the results.
hizbula sucks its power by swapping the support of people on the street. If they don't have public support for their activity they would cease to exist. No sane people can withstand a terrorist organization originated in Iran, which acts on other land to achieve something which no one in Lebanon really needs ( to obliterate Israel - for those who are not informed), but that caused Lebanon a lot of damage. ( And not always by Israel, as many anti-Israeli here might claim, see how they destroy the delicate balance between all ethnic groups in Lebanon).
So they have to create a narrative in which they are the heroes of the Arab world who can kick the al-mighty Israel.
Of course, they address the more radical Arabs, those who still dream of destroying Israel and combine forces with militant palestinians under the supervision and financial support of Iran.
Not that Israel had great success but hizbula sustained great damage with hundreds of its men killed and the entire fortified front along the border destroyed.
I think that Israel should have and could have completed what they started, but the stupid Israeli press hampered the war effort and pressed the government to stop the fighting while it was starting to achieve its goals.

Well lets see

Israel went back into Lebanon to

1. get back the captured IDF soldiers
2. To destroy/several weaken Hezbollah

It failed in both objectives.

Hezbollah on the other hand survived the war and are still armed.

They also gained political strength in Lebanon

In other words everything backfired on Israel royally

I would call that a loss.

For those of us who look from the outside looking into the war zone we saw Israel for the 1st time in her war history was forced by Hezbollah to fight a war on Israeli soil where more 300000 Israeli were forced to move out of their homes for weeks. The War was clear lesson to Israelis that next major war is going to be a bad war for Israel.

Israel didn't achieve its objectives. So you can't make a case that Israel won. Meanwhile, Hizbullah has a new and improved standing in Lebanon for preventing Israel from achieving its goals. In some sense, Hizbullah won. They shouldn't, however, get too cocky and sit on their laurels. The nail in their (Hizbullahs) collective coffin will come soon. I just know it.

I bet you still believe in the tooth fairy !

NOBODY won the war you clown ! Read my lips , NOBODY !

All it did was lift the Hezbollah's profile in Lebanon giving Israel a stronger enemy on yet another border , caused untold hardship & loss of innocent lives & for what ?

The excuse given for starting this onesided war was a joke & the 2 soldiers have never been heard of since !

It's about time people who think like you woke up & realised that you are being led by the ring s through your noses !

Israel did win ,you are looking at this all wrong. if you read the BIBLE you would know that in the last days the world is going to try to destroy Israel and Israel was only trying to deafened itself and get the 2 captive back.the arab world knew this, why do you think iran is on the sideline they say that they want to destroy isreal but you don't see them trying to fight them.they will take a beating when they join up with russia and finally invade isreal.then you will see GOD come in and fight their fight because even the USA will abandon them.because this battle is GOD and every knee will bow.
