What you need is a digital SLR camera. If you had even a decent SLR you would throw your old camera away.

With an SLR you can stop a hummingbirds wings inflight!

Only buy a camera from a true camera manufacturer. Like Canon or Nikon they both make amazing optics. Sony and Toshiba makes great stereos, TVs, DVD players and of course the famous Sony walkman.

I recommend the Canon Digital Rebel XT or the Nikon D70 and at least a 4mb memory card.

If you have long dollars get a Canon EOS 1d. I have one and it can takes 10 pictures in one second at upto 1/8000 sec.

I have a used one for sale Email me if your interested.

What you are experiencing is "shutter lag". This is the delay from pressing the button to the camera actually taking the picture, and it can be extremely frustrating.

There is another issue closely related. Once you do take a picture, some cameras take a loooonnnng time to write the image out. So you might have to wait like 5 seconds to take another pic. Again, very frustrating.

Many new compact digitals do a better job of both problems above, but you need to study the review sites, like www.dpreview.com and others, to see which cameras work well. DSLR's typically have less problem here, some with near instantaneous response and repeat times.

Chuckee neglected to mention that Sony has been making professional television broadcast cameras, home video cameras and "HandyCam" cameras for decades. They also purchased Minolta - complete with all Minolta's outstanding camera and lens technology.

Oh, I almost forgot. Sony also makes the CCD image sensor used in 90% of D-SLRs - including models sold by Nikon and Canon.

Don't discount Sony on the basis that they're an electronics company. ALL camera companies are electronics companies.

As others have already mentioned, shutter speed is not what's causing the delay you're frustrated with. It's the slow focusing method of your point-and-shoot style camera.

Digital SLR cameras use a different focusing method which is much faster. Consider models from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax and Olympus.

The shutter speed is good enough for outdoor shoot with sufficient lightings. However for shutter speed 1/60 and slower, you will need tripod or some form of support to prevent picture blurring. If it takes too long to take a picture, it got nothing to do with shutter speed, its more of the camera's response time to capture and to store to memory card. For newer models, this shouldn't be a issue. Some cameras have response time of 0.01sec or faster.

It would be for point and shoot digitals. It isn't the shutter speed that makes the camera seem like it takes too long for the pic. It's the focus time. Look for a newer model.
