which one is better overall?

The 500 and the 590 are pretty much the same gun. The 590 just a few better features. An extened mag with the abilty to clean it better. Smoother in some cases (loading action). And a black trigger. I like that better than the brass..

the mossberg 590 & the 500 have the same receiver the difference in the 2 is the magazine tube. the 590 has a magazine that is quicker to open to get clean as the military requested

Both are good; the 500 is for hunting and the 590 is a defense/Military weapon. What is your concern?
If You want the most vesital get a 500 combo pack with a choke tube barrel and a short slug barrel.

i got a 500, i shoulda got a 590 though. its easy to clean the magazine tube on the 590. in my opinion for tactical purpose the 590 is better; for hunting and sport 500 due to the wide variety of barrels and chokes available.

I've had Mossberg M-500's since 1972. I have other shotguns, and lots of other firearms, but the only pump shotgun I own is a Mossberg M-500, and it lifes next to my bed, for those little things-that-go-bump-in-the-night.
