Both are fairly safe, depending on where you are.

Just be sure not to bring anything ueber expensive and to keep track of your possessions. It's not that hard.

It depends on a couple of things:
1. What is your budget?
2. Do you want to meet people
3. Do you want to experience fun times?

If you budget is limited, then go the hostels,
If you want to meet and mingle with people then go the hostels
If you want unexpected crazy times, then go the hostels.

Hotels are great if you want complete privacy, safes etc, but really rooms can still get broken into.

If you have padlocks, and dont leave expensive items lying around then you really wont have a problem in hostels.

I spent 6 months travelling in 2005, and had no problems with staying in hostels. In fact by the time I got to Singapore and decided to splurge and stay in a hotel, I was bored out of my brain coz I had no one to talk to

It really depends on the place, but hostels tend to be dorm settings so if you're uncomfortable with leaving your things in the same room as a bunch of strangers, then hotels are better for you.
