probably the one way rental. usually the rental companies calcluate the charge to be competitive but with the price of gas, you wont save alot either way.

It depends on your budget and how much money you are willing to spend. It is cheaper to move via U-Haul, but you have to factor in the time and the stress it will add. You not only have to pack everything, but then load the truck (which is time consuming and tiring -- even with help) and still drive 1000+ miles to Chicago before doing all that unloading.
I moved literally 2 blocks and used a moving service. Though a bit more pricey, there are advantages to using a moving company:
1) You never know how much stuff you truly have until you have to pack EVERY SINGLE ITEM YOU OWN.
2) Just packing is a long, tiring experience in itself. You will save your energy and back muscles not having to move boxes.
3) Using a moving service, you just pack and the company will do the loading and unloading for you, you do not have to worry about how to place the boxes and fragile items in the truck.
4) When unloading, you can tell the movers where to place the boxes at least and save your energy for unpacking.
5) Note, your U-Haul will cost some more as you will doing a one--way move and cannot return the truck from where you rented it.
In your case, make sure you pick a reputable and INSURED company -- check their credentials and problem history through your Chambers of Commerce office. You will have enough items to worry about (cleaning, utility set-up, etc) that you do not want the pressure of the move as well on you. If you want, you could have them tow the car and you could fly ahead of them to prepare your new place for their arrival.
Good Luck.

I have had many bad experiences with U-haul, mostly due to them giving us vehicles that were in horrible shape. You may save money, but you will not save your sanity driving over mountains in an unsafe vehicle!
I'd check on a place that will let you load and unload the truck and they will do the driving. That way you can drive your car separately.

With how expensive gas is, have you thought about having a big moving sale and selling all your big furniture? Believe it or not if you only have thows 4 big items it would probably just be cheaper to buy new when you get there. Not to mention easier on you. Hope this helps!

Fiance and I used 1-800-Pack-rat to move our apartment.
His parents used Pods to move their house.
We are both happy with the service.

Uhaul. No driver to pay.... The car can be put on a trailer. Their small trucks are easy to drive.

my sister is just getting to move from NY to FL and she found that it is cheaper and more convient to hire a moving company she is paying two grand, they drop the box off at your house and give you three days to pack everything, then they take it to the new destination and give you three days to unpack it.
