Tricky question. I would need to know a bit more about the type of riding that you do to answer this question. All kinds of roads, and comfort sugests that you are looking at, either a commuter, or a hybrid bike. As for comfort, you need to sit on the bike to find out, but generally you need to ensure that the frame size is corect.

Have a look at these sites:

www.evanscycles.com
www.rutlandcycling.com

Evans has a frame size guestimator. Also, look at the category Hybrid.

If you are not competing, then most makes will give you a reasonable machine within your budget, but try to stick to the well known manufacturers and look for branded components (SRAM, Shimano, Octalink, etc.). As well as Giant, Specialized, etc. You might also consider Dawes, Claude Butler or even Raleigh/Diamondback.

Go to your local bike shop and talk to them. Get their advice and look around. Without more information on the type of riding that you want ot do, answering your question is difficult, but have a look around and see whats available within your budget.

Luck

Possibly looking at a "Mountain bike". Mountain bikes can handle mostly all ride able terrain. Cheap bikes don't last long, have inferior parts, heavy and just don't ride well. Better quality bikes for me start from $700. You can get by with something less, but it all comes down to your preference and budget.
The better brand of bikes are Trek,Cannondale,Specialized and Giant that you can find at a good bike shop. All of these bikes have web sites that you can visit.
Be sure to get fitted correctly to the bike and wear a helmet when riding. Good luck!

You want a hybrid or comfort bike. All of the large manufacturers make bikes of this kind. I like the offerings from Trek and Specialized if you are staying in the lower price ranges.

try a kona stuff. it cost about $800 but can tackle any kind of bumps, drops, hills, roads and feels good rideing on normal paved roads as well. it is cheap for a bike that can handel just about any thing. if you whant to take it up to the moutains it can tackle the blue trails easily but i'm not sure what kind of performance it gives on the black dimond trails...
