My son (2 1/2) is a year behind on speech. We don't really give into him. We do try to get him to talk. Like when he wants to color we'll try and get him to say color. He can try sometimes, but wont' come out sounding like the word. We took him to a Speech Pathologist and he just said he has the normal amount of vocaulary words for a 2 year old, he just has Expressive Language Disorder. However he hardly puts two words together. And my husband and I understand what he says because instead of saying the word he'll make a certain sound or something. We understand it. Has anyone else had this problem or any suggestions?? Also We are expecting another one this month, I really want him to start talking like most other 2 1/2 year olds. Please some advice!!!!! Thanks a bunch!!!

I would enroll your son in a mother's day out program to get him into a language-rich environment a couple of mornings a week. Perhaps in a group setting, with other talking toddlers, your son will pick up more language. He may not use it at home immediately, but he will use it at school.
My son is slow to talk as well, and here are some games we play that get him talking.
Count down 54321 before doing something fun like squirting the water hose.
Play stop and go. Run/dance around and say STOP. Then say GO and start again.
Sing "This is the way" around the house. "this is the way we wash our hands, wash our hands, wash our hands. This is the way we wash our hands early in the morning." You can sing that one for putting on shoes, combing hair, picking up toys, etc. My son likes to sing with me. So far it doesn't sound like what I am saying, but he is vocallizing and making lots of different sounds in time to the music.
Good luck.

i have a 2 1/2 year old boy, and i tough the same you guys do! but, let me tell you that is very normal, that at this age, kids, don't fully develop full sentences, or even 2 words together, if you took him to a specialist, you should not worry, then. i totally undersand how you feel, and you can get frustrated or embarrased in front of ohers when they ask you why he is not talking, but let me tell you that, ALL CHILDREN DEVELOP DIFFERENT AND IN A UNIQUE WAY. so, my suggestion is, a lot of literacy, talk to him about everything
if you walk on the streets, talk to him about what he sees, the trees, the birds, the sun, the clouds, the people, the cars, what color are they? try to read him a lot of SIMPLE books, not very long because at this age they don't stay sitting a long time in one place. ask open- ended questions always like:
what would happen if we mix red paint and blue paint?
oh look, it turned into another color, do you know what's this color? yes you are right! is purple! as you can see, literacy is not, about reading a book is about all verval comunication between you and your child. trust me, you are not alone, i started doing this, and istart seen a lot of difference on my son, so, good luck!

My grandson (at about two years old) was similar to what you are saying. He is now three and talks up a storm. Does the 2 year old have a younger sibling? Quite often the two kids will develop their own language and won't bother talking to you...they're so busy talking to each other. If the speech person isn't worried, neither should you be.

He "just" has expressive language disorder? If he is disordered, he should be in therapy, period.
Just because he isn't delayed (his vocabulary development has been determined to be within normal limits) doesn't mean he shouldn't be in treatment. A language disorder in this age group IS cause for concern, because it can later affect reading and writing development (i.e., dyslexia). If the speech pathologist who evaluted your boy did not recommend therapy, shame on him. Find someone who will!

I was in the same boat last year with my daughter, my oldest is Autistic so of course
I thought my second child was to. We had it checked out and she is not autistic but she was just a little late, now that she's 4 she does not stop talking. Do not worry too much, I know a lot of children that age who still have difficulty talking.Encourage him like you are already doing, read to him
talk to him ,soon enough he will be talking your ears off!!!

My boy is reaching 2 yrs old and have the same problem too. No matter how me and his dad and grandma teach him to speaks, he just don't care. Not only speech even colouring, playing blocks, listening to stories everything we wanna to teach him, he just don't care. I took my sis in law's advise to enrol him into a playgroup where he can mix around with kids around his age. He has been in the playgroup for about a mth already and now he starts to talk a little and willing to learn what im trying to teach him. I guess mixing with kids around his age do helps.

I have a 5-year-old who's just now starting with 2-word sentences. This time last year he said virtually nothing; now he has over 60 words in his vocabulary.

I suspect that the mercury in vaccinations is what did it to my son, so I started giving him chlorella in his drink last year--and right when I started doing that, he started improving. It's supposed to help get mercury out.

Most public schools do screening for all kids turning 3 to determine if they need early help. we didn't think my son needed any help but they said he needed speech. so he goes twive a week for 2 hours a day and they send a van to pick him up and bring him back. Its a wonderful program. so check with your local public school.
