I just thought an outdoor wedding would be nice...

If you want a really traditional wedding then it might be very difficult to get someone to agree to it. I was looking for the same thing a few months ago but to no avail. The only people I saw that were willing to do whatever you wanted were Catholic priests who had left the church to get married. However, the marriage wouldn't be recognized by the church. Keep asking as someone else mentioned and you might get lucky.

Sorry. A Catholic wedding must take place inside a Catholic Church.

While it would be "romantic" to conduct the ceremony outdoors, we must remember that marriage is a Holy Sacrament.

The Sacraments are gifted to us by God through the Church. Therefore, it is us who must conform to the Sacrament, rather than having the Sacrament conform to us.

God desires that couples receive the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony inside the Church. Reason being, this marital union MUST be sanctified under the eyes of God. The couple shows their desire for god's sanctification by holding the marriage ceremony in His House.

You see, the priest is not actually administering the sacrament. The bride and groom are the administer the sacrament to each other. The priest stands by as a witness of the Church, making sure that everything happens in accordance with the requisites of the Sacrament, liking holding the ceremony in a Church for example.

Hypothetically speaking, if you were to find a priest who actually did allow the ceremony to take place outside a Church, this is a violation of Canon Law and the Church will be forced to declare your union annuled, and you don't want that I'm sure.

Do what God asks of you - receive the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony inside a Catholic Church. This is pleasing to God and He will sanctify your union.

You could always "compromise" by having your wedding reception outdoors. Get married inside the Lord's House, celebrate His Sanctification of your union in the splendor of His great outdoors.

It's been a no-no in the past but some are relaxing a bit & going outside the church.
There are some ex-priests and some retired priests that will do it too.

Start calling some of the churches in your area for info.

To find an officiant type into Yahoo your city, state & wedding officiant (no 's' on the end) You will have a few to choose from, usually on the 2nd page. The larger bridal sites seem to get top billing. If you do go to the bridal sites, please visit the site of someone you think you might like. Those bridal sites make vendors & officiants pay for your contact info so you may not hear back from someone you'd hoped.

Find A Catholic Priest

Be careful there are many rent-a-priests out there, former Catholics, New Catholic, Old Catholic Church, they call it all kinds of things. These are great if you want a Catholic ceremony and you do not care if it is recognized by Rome. If you do care about it being a recognized "Roman Catholic" ceremony, then you need to talk to someone at your Diocese. Just be careful because some people make it sound like they have the Pope's blessing but they don't.

I had the same problem. A catholic preist usually will not marry you outside. it is against the rules. a few years ago they changed it because they said that people were taking advantage of the church with the outside weddings, so they stopped the outside weddings. But i do know that if you look hard enough you can find a catholic priest to do it. I on the other hand am having a pastor marry us because we couldnt find a catholic priest to do it! I think it just depends on the area! so if it is ok you should look in pastors instead of priests!

It all depends on the Priest. If you want to have a wedding outside the Church sanctuary, you will not be able to have Communion . The Eucharist can't be brought outside. I found a Priest who would perform the ceremony at the reception hall, but according to my ultra-Catholic relatives, it "doesn't count" in the eyes of the Catholic church.

Some priests would do a simple ceremony in the church. You would need only two witnesses. Then have the big ceremony outdoors.

You could do the church thing early in the day, and have the big one in late afternoon.

Remember that there is no such thing as a 'wedding ceremony' for Catholics. Matrimony is a sacrament, not a ceremony, The proper place for the celebration of a sacrament is in church.

By having an outdoor ceremony, you are removing God from the process by not celebrating the sacrament in the place designed for the worship of God.

Have your reception outside if it means that much to you.

Yes, Catholic priests will do weddings outside. I was once at a Catholic wedding, and it actually took place in a steam. Not on the banks, but IN the stream!
