Its been about 45 years since my first communion but at that time, a smaller pocket bible and a nice rosary were typical gifts. I am sure I got some other gifts but they would have been inexpensive during the early 1960's. I see nothing wrong with a saving bond. They take so long to mature nowadays it is best to give theses as a gift when they are pretty young since they wont mature until they are in college.

Go to a store and get a box one of those um sterling silver ones i believe they are and have the name of the child who is recieving their communion and the date and anything else you like engraved in it. I got one for my first communion and I thought it was a cute idea. The store that the person I got it from went to was called "Things Remembered"

Give the kid something they will actually like. A bible or a cross will end up in a drawer. A gift certificate to his favorite toy store would be nice, or a gift certificate to a place like Chuck E Cheese if one is in his area is something he could have fun with. If you run out of options, everyone likes cash.

Girl or boy? If it is a girl; a sterling silver or 14k gold necklace would be appropriate. A nice gift or either girl or boy would be a bible with their names printed on the cover.
