So, I bought a new car and just got my standard license plates... I'm a little bit embarrassed about what is on the plates. Will the California DMV reissue revised plates or do I need to pay for personalized plates???

You can get new plates, but you have to purchase them. If you want vanity/personalized plates, there are additional fees. I noticed others are saying you can get the vanity plates, you can get another set of regular plates, for a small fee. I worked as a title agent for years, a customer returned a plate with the following 666ABD. I'm not religious in any way, and know not much about the bible. The lady was very upset, and I couldn't figure out why, until my coworker told me about the bible and this mark of a beast. She insisted the car would be targeted with evil. Anyway, just a note I thought I'd share.

Well, not sure about California, but when I licensed my cars here in Kentucky and also in Illinois I had to pay extra for the personalized plates. I would try and do a search for "California DMV" and see what comes up. That should at least get you some phone numbers so that you can call them to find out the fees for changing your plates.

If the plate has an embarrassing message, they would not have been issued. Most States (and I'm sure even California, the land of fruits and nuts), will not knowingly issue an obscene, disrespectful or nasty comment. If it bothers you, maybe you should just go back to the DMV and ask for another set? It may cost you a few dollars, but it will definitely be cheaper than vanity plates.

If I see the front I think it's someone from here (Michigan) with a California plate in front for decoration (very common for some reason) Since we don't have front plates. If it is a legit California car I think wow what a long drive

If it's an obvious offense they should replace them without question. It doesn't hurt to ask
