For starters you both like books, That makes the common grounds for starting a conversation much easier. If you are both silently reading in the same sort of area and he is reading a book you know about try saying something like "hey, thats a good book that one" then just let it flow.

Or you could get him to help you get a book from a top shelf and try something from their. Dont be embarresed just act interested and he should pick up on it.

Best of luck tho

Yes there is. The fact that we are working hard for our own financial security (not taking from the government); and saving some of our money for our future retirement. Oh, and Sam Elliot has a wife. He's been married to the same woman for a lot of years. She has even played in his movies with him. Have you ever seen the movie called, "The Shadow Riders"? The lady in that movie who helps Tom Selleck's and Sam Elliot's characters to free the captives from the bad guys down in Mexico; is Sam Elliot's real life, honest to goodness wife; and they still act like newly weds, from the reports that I've seen or heard.

Happy, I used to be so shy aroung guys when I was young that when one at school would ask me out,I'd say my parents didn't allow me to date. Now that I'm older I see that shyness held me back on having fun and meeting new people. Just try to ease into it and take the suggestions of the answers above. I wish you good luck and hope you get over this awful problem.

Walk up to him and say hi. Start a conversation about some particular book (perhaps one that's in a field of mutual interest).
