To make clean, cheap electricity. Unfortunately it didn't turn out to be as cheap as expected, partly because of gigantic amounts of money spent on safety features and partly because of the high cost of Uranium.

The first Nuclear power station was opened at Calder Hall in the UK. they would have you believe that it was for generating clean electricity, but in the 1950's its purpose was to produce nuclear fuel for atomic bombs...much like what Iran is trying to do now.....

It was thought that limitless energy could be produced from a "teaspoon" of radioactive material.

Also sadly to produce bombs.
