The first answerer was very right in saying you may regret asking this here. This is a very heated topic and you will get some very hateful, horrible, propaganda filled answers. However you may also get some insightful ones as well.
LEGALLY, purely legally I believe that if someone kills a woman who is more than 20-25 ish weeks pregnant then they can be charged with both the murder of the mother and of the child. However this may vary state to state.
You will note that I do believe that it is ILLEGAL to perform a legal medical aboration after 20-21 weeks ish.
That is just the facts and legality of the question you asked, without the emotionally responses or opinions in it.
Each person is different in what they think, feel, and believe on abortion. Some feel that the "fetus" is a child, a person from the moment of conception and that an abortion at any point is murder. Some people believe that it is a woman choices and that she should have the right to terminate the pregnancy at ANY point.
MOST people I believe fall somewhere inbetween these to extremes.
I myself never plan on getting an abortion, I say plan because there are extenuating circumstances that may force me into a situation where I don't know exactly what I would do.
And no I don't think abortion should be used as an alternative to contraception, or a form of contraception itself. The opps I got pregnant and it interferes with my professional life isn't right in my opinion.
However I do feel that there are some situations where abortion should be allowed. Rape, Incest, medical necessity, etc. In order to allow women the right to be able to obtain abortions under these circumstances, they must be legal.
Does that mean that some people will abuse the system? You bet. Just like people have the right to own a firearm to protect themselves, but some people abuse that right, buy the firearm and kill others. It is the up the people to act responsibly within the confines of the law.
That is the long and short of it in my mind, without getting far far too lengtly.
Good Luck, and Good *if not a bit risky* question

I feel it is murder and I am totally against murder...of any kind.
I know people say a baby isn't really a baby until it is born...but my little girl had a spunkiness and personality even in the womb...she is two now and still 'acts' the same. They are human beings...it is horrible to kill them. Let's say you were holding a VERY premature baby, you could save it and get it the help it needed....or you could kill it.....what would you do? Pro-Abortion say it isn't a baby yet, that's like saying it isn't real. It is a baby...no matter what fetus stage it is in. Okay...enough preaching...haha.
This isn't a good topic-people are going to get ugly...haha!

Abortion is murder in the name of "choice" and "womans rights". Abortion is the removal of a baby, fetus, embryo, it's a stage of life, still human. There are several ways to do it.
1. Suction Aspiration: This is the procedure most often used in the first trimester of pregnancy (the first three months). The abortionist inserts a suction tube (similar to a vacuum hose with an extremely sharp end) into the mother's womb. The suction and cutting edge dismember the baby while the hose sucks the body parts into a collection bottle.
2. Dilation and Curettage (D & C): In this procedure, the abortionist uses a loop shaped knife to cut the baby into pieces and scrape the uterine wall. The baby's body parts are then removed and checked to make sure that no pieces were left in the mother's womb.
3. Dilation and Evacuation (D & E): This form of abortion is used to kill babies in the second trimester (24+ weeks). The abortionist uses a forceps to grab parts of the baby (arms and legs) and then tears the baby apart. The baby's head must be crushed in order to remove it because the skull bone has hardened by this stage in the baby's growth.
4. Dilation and Extraction (also known as D & X or Partial-Birth Abortion): Used to kill babies well into the third trimester (as late as 32 weeks old), the abortionist reaches into the mother's womb, grabs the baby's feet with a forceps and pulls the baby out of the mother, except for the head. The abortionist then jams a pair of scissors into the back of the baby's head and spreads the scissors apart to make a hole in the baby's skull. The abortionist removes the scissors and sticks a suction tube into the skull to suck the baby's brain out. The forceps are then used to crush the baby's head and the abortionist pulls the baby's body out the rest of the way.
5. Salt Poisoning: This technique is used in the second and third trimester. The abortionist sticks a long needle into the mother's womb. The needle contains salt which is then injected into the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. The baby breathes in, swallows the salt and dies from salt poisoning, dehydration, brain hemorrhage and convulsions. Taking nearly an hour to die, the baby's skin is completely burned, turns red and deteriorates. The baby is in pain the entire time. The mother goes into labor 24 - 48 hours later and delivers a dead baby.
6. Prostaglandins: Used during the second and third trimester, prostaglandin abortions involve the injection of naturally produced hormones into the amniotic sac, causing violent premature labor. During these convulsions the baby is often crushed to death or is born too early to have any chance of surviving.
7. Hysterotomy: Performed in the third trimester, this is basically an abortive Cesarean section (C-section). The abortionist makes in an incision in the mother's abdomen and removes the baby. The baby is then either placed to the side to die or is killed by the abortionist or nurse.
8. Chemical abortion:
a. RU-486: RU-486 blocks the hormone that helps develop the lining of the uterus during pregnancy (progesterone). This lining is the source of nutrition and protection for the developing baby. The tiny boy or girl is starved to death and then a second drug, misoprostol, causes contractions so that the dead baby is expelled from the womb.
b. Methotrexate: Highly toxic, this chemical directly attacks and breaks down the baby's fast-growing cells. It also attacks the life-support systems the baby needs to survive. When the systems fail, the baby dies. Misoprostol is then used to cause contractions and push the dead baby out of the womb.
c. Abortifacient birth control (the Pill, Depo-Provera, Norplant, the IUD, Emergency Contraception). These abortion-causing chemicals and devices can act to kill preborn children in the earliest days of life. It is well known that abortifacient methods of birth control may act to inhibit ovulation and prevent conception. However, most women don't know they also act to alter the lining of the womb so that the implantation of a newly conceived child cannot occur. If the child cannot implant in the lining of the womb to receive nourishment, he or she dies.

Do you remember a few years ago when they were arguing the partial birth abortion issue? That is when the baby is being born, they literally suck the baby's brain out through the soft spot and kill the child.
Abortion is a personal issue and sometimes I believe it can be ok, but not when someone was being reckless.

I see it as murder. The child, not fetus, CHILD can feel pain. Their hearts beat, and they can scratch their noses, wiggle their fingers and suck on their toes. I know because I watched my daughter do so in one of my ultrasounds. I couldn't go out and put a gun to someones head and pull the trigger. At the same time I can't kill someone who I've been given as a blessing. And I'm 16, If I had an abortion, I wouldn't be holding the one person that makes me whole right now.

Yes it is the killing of an unborn baby. Some people say fetus but it is still a baby.
Just because there are things that are legal it does not make them right.

This is a very volatile topic, but people seem to be maintaining their cool in their responses. I, along with most women, feel very strongly about this. I personaly feel that the baby comes to life at the moment of conception. That it has a soul immediately. I also believe that we have the right to choose. The time for our choice is when we have unprotected sex. Not after. I know lots of women have reasons. I got pregnant at 18. I was unmarried. Abortion was never a consideration for me. I now have a beautiful 16 year old daughter. My choice was life.

I'm actually surprised you've gotten such intelligent answers and not these raving maniacs that usually respond so such questions. I will leave my personal opinions out of it. This debate usually opens a huge can of worms. I'm assuming that you're just looking for facts and not moral arguments.
technically abortion is ending a human life in its earliest stages. I'm not going any further than that.
Okay nevermind about the whole maniac thing. While I was writing I see you got some interesting answers. Good luck with that fresh can of worms.

it has been proven that a heart beat is detectible 10days after conception thats befor you even know your pregnant and when the baby is beign aborted it actually tries to get away from the vaccum by moveing away from it in the uterus so if the "embryo" is not a liveing thing than why does it have brain waves and heart beat and tell me why when we want it to be a baby it is and when we dont its just something else?if your in the hospital and in a coma and still have brain waves you are not concidered dead but very much alive and will be given any measure possible to keep you alive so why is it so different ?

Abortion is an act that kills the unborn fetus and removes it from the uterus. It's done, depending on the state, up to the 24th week of pregnancy. The debate is wheter or not that unborn fetus has a right to life. No one disputes it's killing it, as it was alive and then after the abortion it is not.
