That depends on how it's structured. The networth of the world is far from negative. It's like this. If I have a $20,000 loan on a car and $22,000 in bonds, both of those are debts. Cumulatively, they're $42,000. But that doesn't mean that if everyone called in their loans there would be a negative gross balance.
Everyone owes money to everyone else. If you borrow $10 and you loan someone else $10, that's $20 total debt, but $0 net worth.

I'm confused - so I have no money? I'm still confused. Isn't world debt a negative number because it only includes some countries (not the world) that are indebted to other countries (like the US)? And those other countries are rich (or have rich people in them)?
How can the world debt be negative?

I watched it.
We went off of the Gold Standard years ago.
No Fort Knox now.
Somebody said that if we were still on the Gold Standard, there would be no unemployment, a man (one person) could afford the house and cars etc. for his family, everything would be humpty-doorey!
Don't know for sure, haven't been to College for Economics.
Ditto...............
as far as conspiracys, My Foil Hat has Ears on it too! (it is a Real Mickey Mouse Hat from Disneyland)
Works too!
Put foil all over it, knocks down the Brain Waves too!
(no comments Please!).
Ditto...........LDX calling Berlin, LDX calling Berlin, come in Berlin..................

Debt is a contradiction in terms.
Debt actually makes someone money.
You borrow $100
You pay back $110.
You were in debt $110, however the lender made $10
That being the case..............
I just want to know who do we owe all this money to?

I believe you are correct. It is a myth and it is also real in the sense that we use it to barter for goods and services. It is mans creation. I say render to Cesar what is Cesar's and to GOD what is GOD's.
At best it is numbers we use that are supposed to represent gold but we now have much more currency then gold to support it. It's all a number game.

There is a certain paradox to having a monetary system where the worldwide economy is actually in the red, especially considering we don't openly trade with any other planets, so where is the money going...

wow, you've got my brain all twisted up now! If the whole world is in debt, how is there money? I know the answer to this is probably sensible, but I can't think economically, so you've really got my brain tied up in knots now trying to figure it out! Thanks a lot, little kitty.

It is true....I think we should forgive all national debts for each country and just "start over"...some of these national loans will never get repaid.
