Cats have whiskers for a variety of reasons... one reason is that they aid them in sensing movement around them, including air currents. This can help them navigate through the dark, because they can sense where other objects are. Also, the whiskers on a cat's face are about as long as the widest part of their body... this enables them to test whether or not they could fit through a tight passage by first trying with their head. Besides, whiskers make a cat look cute and enable them to tickle us and make us laugh! :)

Its like an extra sensory organ for them. The move very swiftly, particularly in the dar, and if their whiskers hit something , it lets them know they are close. Almost like a cane for the blind.

To aid with navigation and sensation, cats have dozens of movable vibrissae (whiskers) over their body, especially their face.

It's an evolutionary thing.. helps them to sense what's around them so their nose and themselves are protected. Maybe it's also good for during the night when they are supposed to be hunting.
