I purchased a couple of items from an online retailer and they sent me my exact order, twice, but only charged me once. I did nothing to perpetuate this at all. Its the companies mistake. Should they pay for their mistake? Should I have to go out of my way to contact them and send the duplicate merchandise back to them? Would I be wrong to keep it? Its not like I wanted for this to happen but its a pain in the butt to me really.

Thank you all so much for you input. I knew contacting the retailer was the right thing to do. I just needed a little push. I have sent them an email and am awaiting a response. I feel better now.

The right thing to do would be to email them and tell them of their mistake. If they choose to let you keep it at no charge, then keep it. They will likely be most grateful that you helped them out. Mistakes like that can put a company out of business if they continue unchecked.

Yes, it's essentially the same thing as stealing.

It's more specifically known as "conversion". While you may not have had the specific intent to permanently deprive the retailer of their property when you initially received it, you formed the specific intent to deprive them of it when you decided to keep it and not pay them for it.

Conversion is also a crime. While you're most likely not going to suffer any negative consequences for keeping the items since the retailer probably wouldn't do anything even if they discovered their mistake (economically it makes no sense for them to prosecute you, although they could conceivably file a negative credit report on you if the mistake were not rectified), technically you're still guilty of the offense if you knowingly choose not to correct the situation.

The law says you can keep it since it's the online retailer's mistake. But morally speaking, it would be better to contact them and see if they want you to return it. (Sometimes they'll let you keep the items just because you were honest enough to do the right thing.) Your conscience will feel better once you contact them.

paying for things is one of mankinds fanatical ideas, so it would not be wrong to keep it. The tricky part is that it may be wrong to not send it back. Note: in a better world you could sell the item to someone else then send the money you made (minus 10% or whatever) back to the company.
P.S. That makes up for the time I was buying something and got charged twice for getting one thing.

I think the ethical thing to do would be to contact them, and make them send the packaging and pay for the postage for you to send it back to them. Their mistake should only cost them the expense of the packaging. But it would be wrong for you to make them spend more for their mistake than that, by keeping the items. That's my opinion. So their mistake shouldn't cost you anything - but it shouldn't cost them everything!

Glad u did send them a mail.Sometimes the way we live might affect others.Like our children etc.Sometimes others might be watching you closely and when christians live in the honest way someday who knows they too might change there ways.Well done mate.

read John 3:16 .GOD sent his son JESUS so when we believe in JESUS we have eternal life.JESUS lived a sinless life and gave up his life as a sacrifice so we can be sin free. Ask JESUS to come into your heart and forgive ur sins and
cleanse ur past with his blood.

With a simple prayer like above u can be saved.JESUS loves u and wants u to be saved.

I'd contact the retailer. They may "reward" you for your honesty. If they want the merchandise back, though, you shouldn't have to pay to get it returned. Good luck.

{{You should at least contact them and give them the option, if they pay the shipping, to send it back. If they say "just forget it", no harm, no foul.}}

I agree with this answer, honesty is always the best policy. Definitely contact them and give them the option. Like it says, if they pay and arrange for the shipping, then send it back. Most likely they will just say keep it.
That's happened to me before, and that's what I did.

It is wrong for you to keep the second shipment, it is the same as stealing.

I would call them and make arrangements for a return. However, you should not have to pay for the return shipping. I would think they would be grateful for your honesty.

The company doesn't need it that bad if they shipped it to you accidentally. Sell it and do something nice for someone else with the money. That should make anyone from any religion smile!
