The o2 sensors on the VW's range from about $25 to 200+ depending upon application. Have you had someone check and tell you the 02 sensor is defective? What year is the Golf and what milage? In certain states the o2 sensor is covered by an emissions warranty up to 3 years or 50,000 miles.. If its out of warranty, make sure you know which one is defective!! Some VW's have 4 o2 sensors on them! It's a job that a do it your selfer can do; I recommend doing the job with the vehicle siting overnight; spray some lockease or similiar product designed to lubricate and loosen rusted nuts/bolts. I recommend this because fairly often you can strip the threads of the cat, exhaust manifold or whatever with out much effort. Always better to be prepared ahead of time. If the o2 sensor does not seem to want to come loose, have a shop replace it to hopefully avoid stripping the threads. Because labour rates vary dependent upon location, I suggest figure labour at between 1/2 hour to 1 hour depending on location of the o2 sensor at the shop's posted hourly rate. Hope this helps, a car nut; former VW dealership service employee...

If you do it yourself, $15 for the socket (+$15 for a decently sized ratchet if you don't have one... those sensors are on hard!) + anywhere from $40-$200 for the sensor itself + about an hour figuring out how to swap it your first time.

Add $75.00 to $100.00 for labor to the above answer if you have a shop do it.
