Like many problems of this nature, theory is straightforward. Putting it into practice is the difficult part.
The main causes of excess weight gain are overeating, eating the wrong foods and lack of exercise. Poor body image plays a role. Depression and more overeating follow. Underactive thyroid and POCS are medical problems that may need to be ruled out, but even then the child should not hide behind those diagnoses.
Many pre-teens do well in a group setting. Some pediatric hospital are setting up or have set up weight loss programs. Summer camps are often helpful, but effectiveness varies. Research out any of these facilities before signing up. Obviously this is not free.
A previous responder mentioned dietary changes to healthier foods and more exercise. I second that. Education helps. Consequently, the mother should check with the school, too. School districts have been mandaded to develop Wellness Programs that offer healthier food choices, diet and nutrition information, and routine exercise programs. It is important that the school is committed and that parents support the school in its efforts.

Firstly, make sure the girl doesn't have a medical problem. She could have a thyroid problem, or a problem to do with hormones. So get her doctor to the tests she needs. There is no easy way to lose weight except a healthy diet and exercise, and that is 'free' so she should be happy with that!

the best advice I can offer is making healthy changes to her lifestyle. Get her active, may it be going on family walks or bikerides daily or playing actively with friends outside. And make sure she is on a healthy diet. cut out the junk food and proccessed stuff and save those for special treats. Lots of lean protien, whole grains and fruits and veggies. Great to hear that you guys are catching it early before it gets less manageable.
