What could be a boil at the back of shoulder?

my husbands got this boil which looks like a pimple at the back f his right shoulder. It pains when touched and is a bit reddish as if inflamed. Could it be something serious? do we need to see the doctor if it doesn't heal on its own?

sounds like it's a zit

could be a sebaceous cyst. If so, it will drain on it's own. But if that is what it is, it will keep coming back, at times, until it is completely removed by a doctor, which is a minor thing.
