Oil companies are in a large, multi-pronged effort to force a non-optional gasoline infrastructure... eliminating sidewalks is one of the key components of the plan.... the other is making everything available at driving distance located wal-marts at irresistable prices

Because the suburban sprawl is the law. The 3 rules of the suburban planing, and urban in some ways, are the segregation of the uses, the dependence on the automobiles and the isolated house. In this utopia way of life, where the machines are extensions of your body, you don't need to walk to anyplace because you're supposed to drive. The sidewalks promotes walking and the communication between the people, concepts that works in contrary to the companies that make and sell houses and cars. I believe the cost of the sidewalks is insignificant in relation with the cost of the house and is not a reason to eliminate them.

You answered your own question. Side....Walks. So we have less of them. Get it???

I never know when someone want a serious answer. So here is my serious answer.

They are a big expense, and in order to get a Red light put up at a cross section in many towns, they have to have a couple of serious accidents then people start signing a petition, and submit it to the township. This happened in Monsey, New York many years ago.

Same with sidewalks, if you start a petition and show reasonable cause It might help.

Good luck

What a great question! My town has sidewalks in some places and not in others. I feel its probably a city/town money issue. The more the build, the more they have to maintain. It would be great for one uninterrupted sidewalk to the train station, I'll be honest.

Rather simple.. the only reason the roads are paved because they are lucrative business for the local government. How many infraction fines do you think they can give a person walking? None.

You might want to remind your local government about the importance of sidewalks.

You as a voter have to ask for them! Get your friends and neighbors together and start a political action to demand this of your town.

It might involve a new property tax, so you might need to do some campaigning!

Now here's a trick: Find the wheelchair handicapped in your area and mobilize their interests. I have heard of handicapped people pressing for sidewalks under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
