Not always. Psychiatric disorders have a list of symptoms, and usually to get a definitive diagnosis, you have to meet a certain number of symptoms, but not any specific ones. It's common to have sleep disturbances, but not everyone necessarily does.

I have a relative that has been diagnosed with this disorder and I am very intrested in the comments and answers you receive from this question. She has been known to sleep days on end, or run around like a rabbit. She's either way way up or really down and I don't think she's taking her meds.
Thanks for the question, I hadn't thought to ask it in Yahoo!

i am bipolar.the longest i ever went without total sleep was 3 days.ive had weeks though where i only slept for a few hours every night.its really awful. i wasnt on any of my meds.i'm back on them now, thank god. a lot of times we "bipolars" will be on meds for a while, then think,oh i'm ok now and go off our meds. i've learned, over the years, thats not a very good idea.

my personal experience during manic episodes (which can last several days or weeks) is a feeling of very high energy, lack of concentration, irritability and frustration easily, lack of appetite etc.

when my bro would get manic he talked a mile a minute. he was impulsive and goofy. it can cause insomnia as well but each person is different. you don't have to have insomnia to be bi-polar.

this is very complicated. you can't diagnose something like this here for a verity of reasons especially if you have been taking any medication including that for depression. go to depression.com or reliable web source.
