I ask this because what if I found another insurance company that I like better than the one provided?

Absolutely, you can.

Just be sure you know what you're getting, coverage wise, and exactly what the costs are. Rarely do you get a "better deal" on an individual policy.

Sure you can but your premiums will be a lot higher. With employer sponsored plans, the employer is picking up part of the tab and has negotiated a special plan and pricing based on insuring a group of employees.

An individual plan with similar coverage will cost several times more than what you are currently paying.

Yes you can, but you will have to qualify for coverage and pre-existing conditions may apply. Also your husbands plan may not let you join until open enrollment time - so check that first. If you decide to go it on your own, my advice is to check into a plan from a reputable and well known organization such United HealthCare, Aetna, Humana, Blue Cross/Blue Shield or Kaiser Permanente. You may be able to find cheaper, but the benefits, claims payment and customer service is generally better with a "named" carrier.

Of course you can----but the big reason people DON'T do it is because places like your husband's company kick in a huge chunk for employees. Without that subsidy, your premiums for ONE person would probably be about $300 a month--and you can DOUBLE that for both of you.

Sure you can, but it will probably cost more. Most insurance provided by employers is subsidized by them.

Yes you can. Unfortunately you will have to pay the whole premium. No employer help.
