Israel as a nation rejected Christ as Savior. They chose not to believe that He was/is the Son of God, equal with God, and therefore the same God that brought them through the wilderness of Sinai so many years before. As a result the church came into being and God has been gathering His church to Himself awaiting that time when His attention will return to the Jewish people during the tribulation. Many Jews will be saved at that time when the anti christ sets himself up in the temple as god. But until that time many are secular as you say but there are those that are saved by grace through Jesus too.

Being jewish does not mean you have to practice judaism. Many Israeli jews do not feel that the religion of their ancestors is relevant in the world today, at least not to the extent that the orthodox feel it is.

Israel should serve as a warning to fundamentalists. It is a country which has put orthodox jews (their fundamentalists) in charge of education and has enacted many of the religious laws that christian fundamentalists are demanding. But rather than cause a rebirth of religion this has caused a flourishing of secularism.

First,in response to crypto t I am quite sick of this israeli propaganda line - endlessly repeated - that this government is supposedly the only non-theocracy and non-monarchy is the mideast. Like all propaganda,it's a lie based on repetition. Ever heard of Turkey? Egypt? As to the question, most of the jews in Palestine were atheists before they went there and they or their descendants have remained so. Ironically, they enjoy support only from southern-fried fundamentalists whose support is based on hebrew scripture (or mythology if you wish) to the effect that G-d promised them this land, and so on. So what the fundies regard as chosen people (ALL major Christian denominations do not - God's covenant is with Christians, since theirs is not a racial religion but one open to all of humanity - I still don't see how fundies can call themselves Christian when they reject our core beliefs). Why are they secular? Because they always were weak in faith and they just got work until, today, their religion is all but extinct. Hopefully, their scripture will be removed from the Christian canon so that it does not inspire theological horrors like fundies;everything in it contradicts the Gospel anyway. Then the fundies can let it all hang out and stop pretending to be something they are not; they can be Jews or messianic Jews or whatever. As for Those Persons Formerly Known As Jews - no,they aren't,not anymore and they don't have more right to Palestine then the british did to the bahamas, and should get out - just as the british got out of the Bahamas.

Because the whole set-up was started by Eastern European socialists. It does seem awfully strange, when you consider that their only real base of support is fundamentalists, like the president, who think they have a right to oust the natives because of a fable from Jewish scripture, unfortunately a portion included in the Christian canon. It's all such a morass of contradictions.

I would guess for the same reason many Americans are secular.

there is a story about selling a birthright for a mess of potage... see Essau and Jacob in the book of Genesis... we sell God short all the time and some Jewish people have no monopoly on making that mistake

it's possible that some struggle with the issue of evil in the world particularly since the holocaust
it's sad... because... the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob... who sent Jesus... is a treasure

Because they're smart. Israel has its share of Hassidic Jews and other ultra-orthodox groups who are tolerated, but a lot of liberal Judaism seems to be more humanistic and devoted to the 'here and now'. The government of Israel itself is secular--practically the only non-theocracy and non-monarchy in the Middle East.
